Job description
Crossing Guard (Temporary Employee)
Under general supervision assists in ensuring that the district Vision, Mission and Goals are achieved and is responsible for preparing crossing zones and assisting children in crossing streets safely in school zone areas. Reports to the Principal (or his or her designee).
Prepares school crossing zone by turning on warning lights and/or placing warnings cones in designated area; Directs or escorts pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic when necessary; Directs traffic movement or warning hazards, using signs, flags, whistles or hand signals; Communicates traffic and crossing rules to adults and students; and Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent. Successfully complete a two-hour South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy-approved training course, provided by the Sheriff's Office Training Unit, prior to assuming job duties.
Job requires general knowledge of current South Carolina traffic laws; great responsibility for the use of discretion and independent judgement in the safe crossing of children.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to use accurate judgement of traffic flow, speed and direction of travel; regular use of hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones and lights.
Regular and prompt attendance is essential; subject to exposure to the elements: heat, cold, and wet conditions; job involves walking and standing for long periods of time; constant seeing and hearing are required to fulfill job responsibilities; subject to exposure to environmental and/or physical hazards. Physical demands are restricted to general office activities requiring movement/lifting items weighing up to 35 lbs. Berkeley County School District is a smoke free district.
