Job description
Bus Monitor PositionThe Bus Monitor ensures the safety of children as they are transported from the Neighborhood School to the schools where the English Language Learner Programs are located. Riding Bus Monitors are assigned to a bus route and are present from the first pick up stop through the last drop off. Riding Bus Monitor assignments are determined on an annual basis based on program enrollment and program needs.Essential Functions & ResponsibilitiesAssist children in getting on the bus and to assigned seatsTake attendance as children enter the busEnsure that students have appropriate name tagsEnsure children remain seated during transportMaintain order and behavior of children on the bus so the driver will not be distracted from safe drivingReport any unsafe behavior to the Principal and MLE DirectorMaintain a positive and calm attitude and use a quiet voice while on the jobAssist the children in getting off the bus safelyRelease children only to persons who are parents/guardians or those designated by the parent/guardianAllow only students in grades three and up to walk to their homes from the neighborhood without an adult with parental permissionEnsure that those students in grades K – through 2 who are not met by a designated adult are returned to the sending school for parental contact; contact the school when this occursCheck the bus to assure there are no children remaining on the bus at the end of each routeInform MLE Office of any changes in ridershipInform MLE Office upon Monitor absence as soon as possibleSign in at the school office at the start of the run; sign out at the school office at the end of the run on a daily basisOther duties as requiredPhysical RequirementsPhysical Strength Requirements: may involve lifting or carrying items up to 10 lbsPosture & Movement Requirements: Frequently StandingSensory Requirements: Ability to perceive written information (near vision); Ability to hear and understand verbal instructionsQualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & SkillsFluency in English and ability to communicate effectivelyAbility to maintain a safe and orderly environmentAbility to establish good working relationship with children, parents, bus driver, and other staffBilingual preferredReporting RelationshipsPosition Reports to: The Director and Assistant Director of Multilingual Learner EducationTerms of EmploymentPosition Type: Seasonal/Yearly EmploymentAugust 2026-June 2027Location: DISTRICT WIDEUnion Affiliation: Non UnionFLSA Classification: Non ExemptPre-Employment RequirementsMA Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) ClearanceFingerprintsThe Somerville Public Schools does not discriminate in its programs, facilities, or employment or educational opportunities on the basis of race, color, age, religion, disability, pregnancy, home status, marital/civil union status, sex/gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, citizenship status, place of birth, national origin, ancestry, cultural identity, genetics or military status, and does not tolerate any form of retaliation, or bias-based intimidation, threat or harassment that demeans individuals' dignity or interferes with their ability to learn or work.
