nJob Summary
nThe University of Michigan Law School is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Accountant Intermediate to join its finance team. The finance team supports the Law School in budget planning, financial reporting and analysis, accounting and financial management, grants and other funding, financial operations, and internal controls and compliance.
nReporting to the Director of Finance, this position will focus on accounting, financial reporting, and the financial administration of internal and external grants and other funding. The position will work closely with members of the finance team, faculty, staff, and program administrators across the Law School.
nResponsibilities *
nnnMaintain the Law School's chartfield and related accounting structure.
n
nnReview and process journal entries and other accounting transactions.
n
nnPerform account reconciliations, review financial activity, research discrepancies, and coordinate corrections as needed.
n
nnComplete month-end and year-end accounting and financial close activities.
n
nnReconcile internal and external grants and other funding, including funding for Law School programs and initiatives.
n
nnCoordinate pre-award activities, including budget development, application submission to ORSP, and application preparation across schools and units.
n
nnMonitor post-award financial activity to ensure expenditures are consistent with approved budgets and funding requirements.
n
nnDevelop standard and ad hoc financial reports and analyses and provide financial information to faculty, staff, and program administrators as needed.
n
nnInterpret and apply university accounting policies and procedures and assist colleagues with financial questions.
n
nnServe as a backup and cross-train in other areas of the finance team's work as needed.
n
n nRequired Qualifications *
nnnBachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
n
nnWorking knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
n
nnStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
n
nnEffective organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated success managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
n
nnProficiency in Microsoft Office, including strong Excel skills, and comfort learning new systems and technologies.
n
nnStrong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
n
nnDemonstrated success working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
n
nnSound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential financial information.
n
n nDesired Qualifications *
nnnBackground in higher education or nonprofit financial administration.
n
nnKnowledge of pre-award and post-award activities for grants and other funding sources.
n
nnFamiliarity with MPathways, eResearch, and other university administrative systems.
n
nnProficiency with financial reporting tools such as BusinessObjects.
n
nnKnowledge of university financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
