Job description
Accounting Manager / Controller | VC-Backed Membership Platform | Onsite NYC
A growing company is looking for a Controller to join its team. The company has built a differentiated membership-based business that brings together a highly engaged community of successful professionals and business leaders. Through its platform and in-person experiences, the company provides members with opportunities to connect, collaborate, share ideas, and access valuable professional and business resources.
This newly created Controller role will take ownership of the company's day-to-day accounting and financial operations while helping establish greater structure, accuracy, and visibility across the finance function. Working closely with the company's outsourced CFO, this person will own the month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, AP, expense management, and other core accounting activities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys owning the operational details of a finance function and wants to play a meaningful role within a lean, entrepreneurial organization. The ideal candidate is highly organized, meticulous, and comfortable rolling up their sleeves to ensure the company's financial information is accurate and reliable.
The company is based in New York City and operates fully in-office, five days per week.
Responsibilities:
Own the company's month-end and year-end close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and preparation of financial statements
Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure financial reporting is accurate, complete, timely, and compliant with U.S. GAAP
Prepare monthly financial reporting packages and support budget-versus-actual analysis for executive leadership and the Board
Serve as the primary internal accounting partner to the company's outsourced CFO, supporting financial reporting, planning initiatives, and special projects
Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, cash management, bank reconciliations, expense reporting, and other operational accounting workflows
Oversee expense management processes through Ramp, ensuring adherence to company policies and improving visibility into company spending
Maintain and administer the company's equity records within Carta, ensuring employee equity grants are accurately documented and tracked
Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives by providing accurate underlying accounting data and operational insights
Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and month-end processes while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and automation
Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, and other service providers to support audit, tax, and compliance requirements
Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and clarity of financial information presented to company leadership and other stakeholders
Continuously improve accounting processes, systems, and reporting capabilities as the organization continues to scale
Requirements:
7-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally with significant experience owning or managing a company's accounting function
Strong understanding of core accounting principles, including general ledger accounting, AP, reconciliations, accruals, financial statements, and month-end close
Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements
Hands-on experience with QuickBooks is required
Experience with financial systems such as Ramp, Carta, Stripe, or similar platforms is highly preferred
Experience working alongside an outsourced CFO, external accounting firm, or other third-party finance providers is a plus
Strong attention to detail with a high level of ownership over the accuracy and integrity of financial information
Highly organized and operationally minded, with a willingness to roll up your sleeves and handle the details
Ability to work independently and take ownership of the accounting function within a lean, entrepreneurial environment
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and improve accounting processes
Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with executive leadership and external financial partners
Comfortable in a hands-on Controller role and motivated by owning the accounting function rather than viewing the position solely as a step toward a CFO role
Salary:
$130,000–$150,000
The above salary range represents the company's good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible base compensation range at the time of posting and is not reflective of the total compensation package, which may also include benefits, equity and other non-cash incentives.
