Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant
The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide specialty medical care. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at Froedtert Hospital. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.
Core Responsibilities:
- Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
- Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
- Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
- Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
- Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
- Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
- Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
- Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
Department Specific Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment cardiothoracic surgery patients in a primarily inpatient environment.
- Writes accurate and timely H&Ps, progress notes, consult notes, procedure notes, discharge summaries and/or admission, discharge and transfer orders.
- Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
- Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the vascular surgery services, such as, but not exclusive to, wound care and drain management.
- Management in perioperative period.
- Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
- Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
- Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
- Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
- Develops an expertise in the coordination and delivery of care to patients on the cardiothoracic surgery service.
- Collaborates with cross-department specialty care teams as well as primary care providers in consultative care of patients with cardiothoracic surgery needs.
Qualifications:
Preferred Experience:
- Previous experience of 2+ years working as an APP is preferred, not required.
- Highly desired previous experience in acute care, surgical specialties or medicine teams such as hospitalist, internal medicine, perioperative, cardiology and emergency.
Minimum Education:
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.
- Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.
Minimum Requirements:
- BLS Certified (American Heart Association Basic Life Support)

- APRN Certification
- Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization or historical certification equivalent
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP)
- Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)
- Family NP (FNP)
- Physician Assistant
- Wisconsin Physician Assistant License
- Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
