HX5 is currently seeking a mid-level aerospace engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will support an established team that is providing mission design support for Space Reactor-1 (SR-1) Freedom, where SR-1 Freedom is the first fission-powered interplanetary spacecraft that will demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion in deep space. SR-1 Freedom is a pathfinder mission that will lay the groundwork and develop technologies for future applications that include surface power on the Moon and Mars.
Primary responsibilities include data analysis and synthesis to support the mission design and trajectory optimization team. The candidate should be knowledgeable about numerical methods and proficient with their application to facilitate solutions. In addition, software development will be necessary when the software packages in use are deficient in required functionality.
This effort is monitored by the Mission Architecture and Analysis Branch at NASA GRC, which provides mission, system, and architecture performance and feasibility analysis for a range of projects including launch vehicle, in-space propulsion, and space craft systems.
Required Skills:
Experience or familiarity with trajectory design and analysis software
Experience or familiarity with orbital dynamics and space mechanics
Experience or familiarity with simulation, design, and optimization
Excellent communication skills for interacting with the NASA team and their industry partners
Highly motivated and able to work independently
Committed to successful collaboration with the NASA team and industry partners
Desired Skills:
Experience working with NASA or experience with: Copernicus, STK, GMAT, MASTIF, or EMTG
Familiarity experience with the development of methods needed for modeling a spacecraft trajectory
Experience with Matlab, Python, C, or C++
Education/Experience:
Completed at least a Bachelor of Science degree with a STEM-related major, from an accredited program, with the following education and experience:
Bachelor of Science degree with 5 to10 years of relevant experience
Master of Science degree with 3 to 6 years of relevant experience
Ph D. with 0 to 3 years of relevant experience
Other Position Requirements:
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
