Job description
Welding PositionThe general purpose of this position is to weld simple to complex components and/or structures while meeting all safety, quality, and schedule requirements. Responsible for various types of weld preparation, welding, and weld finishing operations to accomplish welding in accordance with customer drawings and specifications.Requirements:Proficient in assigned aluminum welding techniques, including weld fillets, gusset toe and wraps, frame wraps and terminationDemonstrated ability to weld into corners / vertical intersections with minimal blendingAbility to evaluate and correct basic weld pick up, with minimal supervisionBasic knowledge in assigned welding techniquesBasic knowledge of wire and filler material applications for various steel alloys and aluminumWorking knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters (amps, volts, etc.)Working in compliance with all safety, quality, environmental and health requirements.Job Requirements:Must be able to pass eye test and workmanship qualification test.Must be tested and fit for respirator use.Willing to work any shift and overtime as required.Education and/or Experience:High school diploma required.Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in a welding trade is required.Shipyard experience is preferred, but not required.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to take direction and follow instructionsGood mechanical aptitude with ability to produce consistent qualityAbility to inspect and correct basic weld pick-up without supervisionAbility to work independently and as part of a teamProblem-solving and trouble-shooting skillsExcellent hand-eye coordination; good spatial orientationAbility to consistently meet production deadlinesAbility to use conventional and precision measuring instrumentsAbility to pass a skills evaluation test to demonstrate welding abilityAbility to weld in uncomfortable positions where applicableAbility to work on beams, scaffolding, ladders and confined spaces.Ability and willingness to work with and to teach less-skilled workersAbility to maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipmentPhysical Requirements:Frequent standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed.Physical ability to lift, push, pull and carry 50+ lbs., bend, stoop and climb scaffold and work on elevated work surfaces, beams, ladders, and confined spaces.While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, talk, or hear.The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.Works in all areas of the shipyard and on-board ships.Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions.Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee's work area.The noise level in the work environment can vary and is often loud.
