Job description

ATUM ( is a 20-year-old, world-leading bioengineering company of ~150 people. We conduct research to advance our in-house technology platforms and to develop new ways to apply them to solve important biotechnological or pharmaceutical deficiencies. The company has state-of-the-art capabilities in machine learning-assisted synthetic biology, and a suite of innovative technologies spanning protein and cellular engineering, gene synthesis, gene transfer, protein expression and manufacturing. We provide diverse, and often highly tailored, solutions to a broad range of clients across the globe.

This is a scientist position in our protein analytics lab, where you will focus on developing robust analytical assays for a wide variety of protein structures, ranging from monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to complex enzymes. You will lead the implementation of comprehensive developability assay panels to evaluate the stability, quality, and performance of these diverse molecule types. The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D in biochemistry, biotechnology, analytical chemistry or another relevant discipline. The applicant’s experience should include exposure to protein analytical methods, particularly including MS, and prior experience working with proteins in an analytical setting. The ideal candidate will have an organized and systematic approach to technical challenges, as well as a track record of collaborative relations with groups such as research & development, analytical development, and protein production operations.

Requirements

Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of and proficiency in key analytical techniques, such as HPLC, binding assays, ELISA, and LC-MS.

Possesses proven expertise in developing analytical methods across diverse protein structures, including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and complex enzymes.

Applies hands-on experience in designing and executing developability assay panels to evaluate and predict molecular performance and stability.

Interprets experimental results effectively and integrates cross-disciplinary data into actionable insights.

Exhibits strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot critical issues, identify root causes, and implement solutions.

Maintains a structured and organized approach to delivering comprehensive analytical services across functional groups at ATUM.

Upholds high standards of quality, precision, and attention to detail across all operational tasks.

Manages multiple concurrent projects and prioritizes competing demands through effective time management skills.

Applies deep technical expertise in operating and maintaining relevant laboratory instrumentation and equipment.

Maintains accurate laboratory records and operates proficiently within Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Communicates clearly and proactively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

Collaborates effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.

Adapts flexibly to shifting priorities and evolving operational requirements.

Monitors and manages inventory levels for laboratory consumables, reagents, and equipment maintenance.

Brings experience with laboratory automation systems (preferred).

Streamlines and automates manual or non-platform operational processes.

Develops and validates customized analytical services tailored to internal and external requests.

Leads and actively contributes to technical research projects within the team.

Mentors junior staff and provides technical guidance across the department.

Education Requirements

Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Analytical Chemistry, or a related discipline, with 0–2+ years of relevant industry experience (or equivalent combination of education and industry experience).

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to regularly manipulate, lift, and pour items weighing a minimum of 5 lbs (and up to 25 lbs occasionally), as well as perform the following physical duties:

Frequently opening and securing laboratory vessels, including applying/removing plate seals, capping/uncapping tubes, and removing lids.

Occasionally ascending or descending step ladders to retrieve laboratory equipment and supplies.

Consistently positioning oneself to accurately transfer and pipette various liquid reagent volumes during routine laboratory assays.

Location: Newark, CA

Compensation: $130,000 - $150,000
