Contract Physician Opportunity

We are seeking experienced anesthesiologists to provide comprehensive onsite and on-call services for Veterans at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center. Physicians will work across the operating room, hospital units, and procedural suites, with responsibility for complex surgical anesthesia, emergency coverage, and complete VA medical-record documentation.

Position Details

Location: Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Avenue, Albany, New York 12208

Assignment: Onsite contract anesthesiologist serving VA patients

Start and term: Anticipated November 1, 2026 through October 31, 2027, with four one-year option periods

Weekday coverage Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; operating-room cases may extend beyond scheduled hours

On-call coverage: Rotating weeknight, weekend, and federal-holiday call; 15-minute telephone response and arrival onsite within 60 minutes when called back

Coverage team: Minimum four-physician credentialed pool supporting at least one anesthesiologist onsite each weekday

Primary Responsibilities

Review upcoming assignments, evaluate patients before procedures, and develop appropriate anesthesia plans.

Provide comprehensive anesthesia for cardiac surgery, orthopedic joint replacement, vascular, thoracic, neurosurgical, plastic, dental, ENT, urologic, ophthalmologic, gynecologic, podiatric, hand and general surgery cases.

Support electroconvulsive therapy and procedures performed in cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, gastrointestinal, and radiology suites.

Provide coverage for surgical intensive care, short-stay care, acute pain management, diagnostic transesophageal echocardiography and emergency airway management, within granted privileges.

Complete immediate anesthesia, intraoperative and postoperative documentation in the VA electronic health record and Anesthesia Record Keeper.

Provide inpatient bedside consultations and outpatient electronic consultations as assigned.

Participate in trainee education and supervision, quality-improvement activities, staff meetings and required patient-safety reporting.

Required Qualifications

US Citizenship

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory or commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Board-eligible physicians may be reviewed only if accepted through the VA approval and privileging process.

Cardiac anesthesiology fellowship training and demonstrated TAVR expertise or experience.

Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification, or accepted equivalent.

Current Drug Enforcement Administration registration and National Provider Identifier.

Demonstrated current competency across the required anesthesiology services and the ability to speak, read, write and understand English fluently.

No current or prior medical license that was restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily surrendered pending action or denied upon application.

Ability to complete VA credentialing and privileging before beginning clinical services and maintain continuing medical education throughout the assignment.

Credentialing and Compliance

Selected physicians must provide documentation supporting licensure, board status, education, training, experience, professional competency and clinical privileges. Credentialing requires VA approval before the first clinical shift. Physicians must also satisfy applicable background, exclusion, health and infection-control requirements.

Maintain required tuberculosis screening and evidence of immunity or vaccination for MMR, varicella, Tdap, influenza and hepatitis B, as applicable.

Complete required VA training covering the electronic health record, privacy, information security, ethics, infection control, workplace safety and other assigned clinical topics.

Follow VA, American Society of Anesthesiologists and Joint Commission standards, including HIPAA and VA privacy requirements.

Report patient-safety incidents promptly and complete required quality and performance documentation.

Schedule and Coverage Expectations

Physicians will be scheduled as part of a credentialed coverage pool. Regular onsite coverage is 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with overtime when cases or emergencies extend beyond scheduled hours. Call coverage includes weeknights from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., weekends from 7:00 a.m. Saturday through 7:00 a.m. Monday, and 24-hour federal-holiday periods. On-call physicians may take call from home but must answer within 15 minutes and report onsite within 60 minutes when requested.

Qualified physicians should submit a current CV and copies of their medical license, ABA certification or eligibility documentation, BLS and ACLS cards, DEA registration, NPI confirmation, and evidence of cardiac fellowship training and TAVR experience. Final selection is contingent upon VA credentialing and privileging.
