Job description

Occupational Therapist

The occupational therapist is responsible for the implementation of occupational therapy services for identified students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned

Evaluation

Utilizes appropriate assessment tools to evaluate fine and gross motor skills for individual students

Recommends students for therapy services based on established criteria.

Writes appropriate IEP goals and objectives based on motor assessments.

Services

Provides direct motor therapy to students in individual or group settings.

Provides integrated motor therapy within the classroom environment.

Provides consultation to classroom teachers, nurses, paraprofessionals and IEP teams.

Provides training for staff regarding individual motor, physical and self-care needs of students.

Provides information to parents for home exercise programs.

Organization and Management

Sends physician referral letters to parents annually.

Physical therapy is implemented only following receipt of physician orders.

Keeps student IEPs and therapy records current and organized.

Establishes therapy schedule based on needs of students as reflected on IEPs.

Attends IEP meetings and team meetings throughout the year.

Holds IEP meetings for motor only students.

Completes required reports for Third Party Billing.

Completes written reports and follows procedural guidelines as set forth by Director and Special Education Coordinator.

Determines equipment needs and reports to the supervisor.

Uses a check-in, check-out system for transferring equipment within the District.

Professional Relations

Demonstrates sound professional judgement.

Interacts positively with other staff members.

Interacts positively with community and parents.

Meets assigned District and department responsibilities.

Works to complete department, District and Board of Education goals.

Professional Growth and Development

Completes required Continuing Education Units to maintain licensure.

Maintains professional growth and development.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience (Required and Preferred)

Graduation, or anticipated graduation, from an accredited college or university.

Valid Kansas Licensure.

Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and adherence to Board policy.

Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing, with parents, patrons, staff and students.

Ability to effectively write detailed reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak in front of large and/or small groups.

Ability to read and interpret documents.

Bilingual communication skills preferred.
