Role Summary
The Artistic Director will lead and oversee the artistic vision, educational alignment, and execution of Artists in Public Schools (AiPS) programs. This role involves collaborating with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and local artists to develop, coordinate, and execute residency projects that showcase the unique stories of each school through the arts. Additionally, the Artistic Director will oversee the exhibition and dissemination of these projects through various platforms, including museums, galleries, local libraries, social media, and the AiPS website. As part of a small but nimble team, the Artistic Director will also support fundraising, overall administration and collaborating with other arts education nonprofits, galleries and artist programs.

This position is a combination of remote and in-person work at the AiPS office space, located at Impact House, 200 W Madison St., Chicago.
Project Development and Coordination (30%)
Work with CPS to identify artist residency partnerships, plan schedules and logistics, and develop project themes
Recruit and support in selecting local artists to participate in the residency program through a rigorous application and juried review process
Facilitate meetings between artists and schools to establish project goals and timelines, in alignment with CPS arts standards and AiPS mission
Provide artistic direction and guidance to artists throughout the residency, conducting school observations and regular check-in meetings
Coordinate project logistics, including scheduling, budgeting and supply acquisition
Artist Management and Partnerships (30%)
Facilitate review of residency artist applications with a review committee
Manage all aspects of artist residencies, including remitting artist payments, facilitating all-artist meetings and critiques, collection of artwork and contracted materials, maintaining CPS vendor status, and overseeing contract management with schools
Support in the creation of grant application materials and writing to subsidize residencies and exhibitions
Collect impact data from artists, schools and partners to assess programming and for grant writing and funding purposes
Artistic Direction and Oversight (20%)
Lead the artistic vision and direction for each AiPS residency
Approve and collaborate with artists on all proposals and curriculum for partnerships with schools
Ensure all projects meet AiPS standards for artistic quality, comply with CPS arts curricular standards and help fulfill the AiPS mission
Ensure all projects are completed on time and within budget
Exhibition and Dissemination (10%)
Develop and implement strategies for exhibiting and disseminating AiPS artist residency projects
Coordinate the installation of projects in public spaces, museums, local libraries and other exhibition spaces
Coordinate with Marketing Director to help manage the AiPS website and social media accounts, ensuring all projects are showcased appropriately
Administration & Fundraising Support (10%)
Create business plans and policies for AiPS in collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff
Prepare slideshow presentations and write notes from relevant meetings with Board of Directors, potential funders, curators, or collaborators
Support Marketing Director in writing programmatic-related copy for social media and e-blast content
Support Director with budget tracking and credit card reconciliation
Provide programmatic related text and data to Director for grant applications and fundraising initiatives
Collaborate with AiPS staff on planning and execution for events and stakeholder meetings
Outreach and Collaboration (10%)
Brainstorm different outreach strategies to increase artist applicants and prospective school partnerships
Develop relationships in the Art and Arts Education world to support Residency Artists professional careers
Attend relevant conferences and openings, in addition to initiating collaborations with other nonprofits, galleries and artist programs to promote AiPS
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Arts Education, Fine Arts, Arts Administration, or a related field preferred
5+ years of experience in arts project management, with demonstrated success in leading large-scale projects
Experience working with public schools or in education settings
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
Strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Passion for promoting the arts and public education in Chicago
Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
Access to a car or reliable source of transportation
Experience with donor or CRM databases, Canva, and Google Workspace platforms is a plus
