Position Summary (1 available)

Chesapeake Music seeks an ambitious, self-starter to join a small, dedicated team of experienced arts professionals and assist in the daily work of the organization, which brings world-class musicians and performances to the Eastern Shore. The Intern will become an integral member of the staff, working closely with the Executive Director and the Consulting Arts Project Manager to implement mission-driven projects and to gain hands-on experience of non-profit music organization management. The internship is tailored to the successful candidate’s interests, skillsets, education and career goals, with projects available in marketing and promotion, operations, development, event coordination, education, and program creation. Each intern will also have the opportunity to propose, lead, and manage a new project, subject to approval by the Executive Director.

Internship Details

Complete an "Aims, Objectives, and Learning Outcomes Plan" in collaboration with the Consulting Arts Project Manager by the end of the first week (this will be the driver for the tailored projects and work during the Internship and will outline the Internship experience)

Consistently work the weekly hours and special events agreed upon at the start of the Internship

Communicate regularly, effectively, and efficiently with the Executive Director and Consulting Arts Project Manager about the Intern’s projects

Meet project deadlines with work in good order

Assist with general organization tasks as needed or assigned

Be an ambassador of Chesapeake Music during the Internship period, thoughtfully interacting with the organization’s community members, which include the artists, Board, patrons, volunteers, and the public new to Chesapeake Music

Complete an "Internship Report" and/or "Exit Interview" on the experience at the end of the internship

The Chesapeake Music Intern will have the opportunity to:

Gain in-depth, resume-building experience with key roles in projects and professional-level responsibilities

Acquire insights and a comprehensive working knowledge of a small arts non-profit organization

Attend Chesapeake events such as the Interlude Concerts, the International Chamber Music Competition, and the Chamber Music Festival while potentially meeting the musicians

Propose and lead a new project that is important to the Intern

The Chesapeake Music Internship program is designed to provide hands-on work experience to students who might be interested in pursuing a career in arts management, music education, performance presentation, or non-profit administration. The length of the program will be determined at the start of the Internship and mutually agreed upon by the Executive Director and the Intern.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be enrolled in high school (or equivalent) or college/trade school/university

Articulate, well‑spoken, and comfortable with written communication

Interested in music, music education, and/or arts administration

Some related experience (can be in school or outside of school)

Punctual, considerate, and comfortable working with various groups of people

Work Hours

Interns are expected to work an average of 5-15 hours/week. In-person work hours are typically Monday through Friday, between 9am and 5pm. Chesapeake Music concerts and special events occur during evenings and on weekends. The Intern would be expected to participate in at least some of these and dates would be identified at the start of the internship. Some project work might be able to be performed remotely, and this will be determined and agreed upon at the start of the internship.
