Job description
Milling Machine OperatorA Milling Machine Operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully, below. A Milling Machine Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the work flow dictates.Key duties include:Operate a milling machine while maintaining the depth of cut and cross slopeRemove existing asphalt pavement by millingFollow specific plans to specify an average depth of cutControl the transverse slope and the longitudinal profileLimit dust escaping during removal operationUnderstand basic survey nomenclatureJudge distance and slopes accuratelyMake decisions based on verifiable standardsRemove existing raised reflective pavement markersUtilize a string line to ensure proper alignmentTake measurements of the cross slopeUnderstand production and quantity requirementsUtilize automatic grade control systemSchedule work while maintaining productionHaul and dispose of milled materialLead and delegate work within work scopeTrain other crew membersPerform daily maintenance of equipmentNotify supervisor if equipment needs repairPerform incidental work items and dutiesQualification requirements include:Demonstrable previous experience as a Milling Machine OperatorHigh school diploma or GED preferredThree to five years or more of industry related experienceAbility to understand work directions and communicate effectivelyPhysical demands include:Constant physical effort, including standing for extended periodsAbility to lift and carry at least 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistanceMaintain alertness to multiple concurrent activities of the construction siteFrequently walk on uneven surfacesSufficient skill and visual acuity to provide direction and flaggingAbility to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safelyWork environment includes:Outdoors in all weather conditionsExposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dustRegular work near heavy equipment and moving machineryExposure to substances such as form oil, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready mixed concreteDemonstrates Safety 1st:Assess work environment for possible hazardsEnsure training is adequate to the taskUse proper personal protective equipment and toolsSpeak up if seeing an unsafe actIdentify and turn in near miss reportsAsk for help, when needed, to perform tasks safelyConsider if there is a safer way to perform work and communicateNewport Construction is experienced in all forms of heavy civil construction.
