Job description
Mechanical AssemblerJoin a high-performance manufacturing team as a Mechanical Assembler, where you will build massive, custom diesel and natural gas engines that power hospital backup generators, data centers, and large industrial vehicles. This is a hands-on, technically demanding role that goes far beyond basic assembly line work, ideal for individuals who are seriously mechanically inclined or borderline mechanics. You will use a wide range of hand and power tools, specialized torque and pneumatic equipment, electrical testing tools, and lifting devices to assemble complex engine subassemblies according to detailed blueprints and work instructions, while learning troubleshooting and repair of in-process engines.ResponsibilitiesAssemble large diesel and natural gas engines from multiple subassemblies using hand tools, power tools, torque equipment, pneumatic tooling, DC electrical tooling, and lifting devices or cranes.Interpret and follow detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, schematics, and written work instructions to complete custom engine builds to customer specifications.Review work instructions and document processes and progress using CPU-based systems, ensuring accurate tracking of each step in the assembly process.Manipulate and position heavy engine components safely using cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices while maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols.Apply proper fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment usage, torque procedures, and quality standards during assembly to ensure engines meet performance and reliability requirements.Use torque wrenches, pneumatic air tools, basic wrenches, and DC tooling to correctly fasten components and verify that assemblies are torqued to specification.Perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and in-process repair on engine assemblies when issues arise during production.Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and production processes to maintain consistency, efficiency, and high-quality output.Work collaboratively in small teams, typically with one other assembler, within designated zones on the main assembly line to complete assigned engine components.Maintain a clean and organized work area, proactively minimizing debris such as metal scraps, packaging, and oil spills to support a safe and efficient environment.Adhere to all safety requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as steel or composite toe shoes, earplugs, and safety glasses.Participate in training and assessments focused on safety, fastening, sealing, hydraulic and torque equipment, and quality, and successfully pass written and hands-on evaluations.Consistently follow quality standards and processes to ensure all assembled products meet internal and customer expectations.Support general production and light industrial tasks related to mechanical and electronic assembly, wiring, and repair as needed.Essential SkillsProven experience working in an industrial environment performing hands-on mechanical tasks.Demonstrated experience using mechanical tooling, including torque equipment, DC tools, hand tools, and pneumatic tools.Mid-level or higher mechanical aptitude, with the ability to perform complex mechanical assembly work beyond basic power tool operation.Experience following written work instructions, SOPs, blueprints, engineering drawings, and schematics.CPU skills sufficient to navigate and follow engineering drawings, digital work instructions, and documented processes.Ability to pass written and hands-on assessments during the training period focused on safety, fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment, torque equipment, and quality.Comfort working with large mechanical systems such as diesel engines, automotive components, industrial machinery, or similar equipment.Ability to interpret measurements using tools such as tape measures and to apply basic blueprint reading skills.Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting quality standards in production and assembly work.Ability to work safely around cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices while handling heavy components.Steel-toed or composite-toe shoes required at the start of employment. No diploma required for consideration.Ability to meet required assessment benchmarks related to general labor and mechanical aptitude.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience in automotive repair, diesel technician work, lube technician roles, or tire shop environments. Background in farming, construction, maintenance, or facilities work involving regular use of tools and equipment.Mechanical assembly experience in light industry or production environments.Familiarity with industrial wiring, electrical schematics, and electronic assembly.Experience using cranes or hoists for moving heavy parts in a manufacturing or industrial setting.Prior exposure to general production or general labor roles in a manufacturing plant.Ability to clearly explain prior experience building mechanical or technical projects from scratch using tools.Experience working under established quality standards and processes to ensure consistent product quality.Comfort describing and executing step-by-step assembly processes for complex builds.Hands-on experience with pneumatic tooling, including understanding of how to safely operate and apply each tool.Hands-on experience with torque tools and procedures, including methods for confirming assemblies are correctly torqued.Demonstrated ability to mechanically troubleshoot equipment or assemblies in previous jobs or personal projects. Why Work Here? This opportunity offers a pathway into a large, well-established manufacturing facility with a strong focus on safety, training, and long-term career growth. Team members can apply for full-time positions after the contract period, with attendance and performance as key considerations, and there is notable opportunity on second and third shifts. Full-time employees receive competitive paid time off, multiple paid holidays, a robust 401(k) match, and comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance starting on the first day of employment. All employees benefit from scheduled raises at 90, 180, and 365 days, creating a clear structure for progression and reward. The culture emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and professionalism, while still maintaining a relaxed, practical dress code and a collaborative team environment.Work EnvironmentThe role is based in a temperature-controlled manufacturing facility that is divided between an assembly area and a machine shop. The environment is clean and organized, with minimal debris such as metal scraps, packaging, or oil spills, reflecting a strong emphasis on safety. Overtime is currently scheduled for most of the year on alternating Saturdays, subject to production needs. Dress code is relaxed, allowing sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, work pants, and jeans; leggings and sweatpants are not permitted. Personal protective equipment is mandatory: steel or composite toe shoes are required, and earplugs and safety glasses are provided and must be worn on the floor. Assemblers typically work in pairs within four main zones on the assembly line, collaborating side by side on various components, with job times varying by area (for example, oil pump and cooler assemblies may take approximately 20 minutes each). The campus maintains specific policies for tobacco use, limiting it to approved break times in personal vehicles in the parking lot.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lafayette, IN.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $21.34 - $22.09/hr.
