Job description

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), located in Cambridge MA, invite applications for a faculty position at any level, but with a preference for a tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2027, or later based on mutual agreement. The McGovern Institute seeks someone with a background in basic science, including but not limited to cell/molecular and/or systems neuroscience, with a strong focus on translational neuroscience in nonhuman animals. We have unique resources for creating and testing genetic models for brain disorders. A PhD degree in neuroscience, biology, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or other relevant field is required by the start of employment. Laboratory space will be within the McGovern Institute.

The Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences offers supportive mentorship to new faculty, an exceptional environment for scientific inquiry, and a strong commitment to an inclusive, welcoming culture. Faculty duties include conducting original scholarly research, teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate level in brain and cognitive sciences, and mentoring students. The normal teaching load is 1.5 subjects per year.

We request that applications include: (a) curriculum vitae, (b) research statement, (c) a teaching and mentoring plan, (d) broader impact statement, (e) three representative reprints or pre-prints, and (f) three recommendations. The broader impact statement can cover topics including but not limited to service, contributions to the university community, or other means of supporting the educational environment. Both BCS and the McGovern Institute value rigorous and replicable science. Applicants are encouraged to describe how these values are reflected in their work to date and their future research plans. Please submit online applications at To receive full consideration, completed applications must be submitted by midnight (EST) on December 1, 2026. Please contact for questions about applying.

The pay range for a 9-month academic appointment are $143,200 - $177,000 for a pre-tenure position and $185,000 - $293,000 for a tenured position. MIT provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the Institute reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. The pay offered to a selected candidate during hiring will be based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience and education/training, internal peer equity, and applicable legal requirements. This pay range represents base pay only and does not include any other benefits or compensation.

All qualified applicants will receive equitable consideration for employment based on their experience and qualifications and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, or national or ethnic origin.
