The Department of Health, Behavior and Society (HBS) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor to join in cutting-edge research and development related to social and behavioral sciences, data science and AI.
This is an exciting time to join the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), BSPH and HBS. JHU has spearheaded many exciting new initiatives involving AI and data sciences, and is in the process of rolling out a globally-leading, campus-wide initiative in the application of AI and data science to a wide range of disciplines. Through IDIES, JHU also has many advanced high performance data platforms and is a global leader in the application of advanced computer technologies. Among the Bloomberg School's ten academic departments, HBS is recognized for having unique strengths in interdisciplinary theory, rigorous qualitative and quantitative methods, and community partnerships. The Department is dedicated to solving pressing public health challenges in Baltimore, the United States, and around the globe by engaging in impactful public health research, training, and practice focused on the influences of social context, structures, systems, and behaviors.

Candidates must have a PhD, ScD, DrPH, or comparable terminal degree by the time of application in a field relevant to the social and behavioral sciences, public health, computer science, data science, or another related discipline. We welcome candidates with diverse disciplinary backgrounds whose research and teaching bridge social and behavioral science with emerging approaches in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, computational methods, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, social media analytics, or related areas. We are particularly interested in scholars who can critically examine the opportunities, limitations, and ethical implications of these emerging technologies while preparing public health students to apply both social science theory and innovative analytic approaches to contemporary public health challenges. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in applying social and behavioral science perspectives and/or innovative data and AI approaches to important public health challenges, including understanding and addressing the social determinants of health and health inequities. The faculty member will contribute to teaching and mentoring across HBS and help shape the future of interdisciplinary education and research at the intersection of social and behavioral science, data science and AI.
Salary: $147,000- $160,000

Salary Range
The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.

Vaccine Requirements
Johns Hopkins University strongly encourages, but no longer requires, at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This change does not apply to the School of Medicine (SOM). SOM hires must be fully vaccinated with an FDA COVID-19 vaccination and provide proof of vaccination status. We still require all faculty, staff, and students to receive the seasonal flu vaccine.
Exceptions to the seasonal flu vaccine or COVID-19 vaccine (for SOM) requirement(s) may be provided to individuals with sincerely held religious beliefs or medical conditions that preclude them from receiving the vaccine. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those candidates who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
