Spelman College seeks teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.
Position Description
The Spelman College Department of Literature, Media, and Writing (formerly Department of English) embraces an expansive vision of language and visual culture. Our curriculum promotes evidence-based argumentation; the pleasures of reading literary, theoretical, and visual texts; critical interpretation as a social necessity; and an awareness of how literary and visual cultures are integral to a free and just society. With deep roots in the genealogies of Black feminism, our curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, aesthetic appreciation, and ethical commitments in order to provide our students a foundation in humanistic knowledge that is important to all fields.
The Department seeks to invite applicants for a tenure-track professorship in writing for new and emerging media with scholarly interest in the ethical questions of artificial intelligence, algorithm, social media, and data science taking intersectional approaches to these concerns/considering how race, gender, sexuality, and class mediate these concern.
