Department Information

The School of Materials Science and Engineering () at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Materials Science and Engineering. Applicants will be considered at all ranks. The search spans all application domains, material types, and primary research activities, including computation and machine learning, theory, and experimentation. We seek outstanding candidates pursuing innovative research that advances fundamental understanding, creates new materials capabilities, and/or addresses emerging challenges in materials science and engineering. Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline, and a strong record of academic and research excellence. The ideal candidate will champion independent and collaborative research at the cutting edge of their field, be able to attract external funding to build strong sponsored-research activities, mentor graduate students successfully, develop and teach fundamental courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in materials science and engineering, and make positive contributions to the School, Institute, and community. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students.

Job Summary

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT) invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. GT offers an extensive collaborative framework of experimentalists and theorists, as well as highly competitive start-up packages. Georgia Tech has policies to promote a healthy work-life balance and is aware that attracting faculty may require meeting the needs of two careers.

The search spans all application domains, material types and primary activities (experimentation, computations, theory). Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline, and a strong record of academic and research excellence. The ideal candidate will champion independent and collaborative research at the cutting edge of their field, be able to attract external funding to build strong sponsored-research activities, mentor graduate students successfully, develop and teach fundamental courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in materials science and engineering, and make positive contributions to the School, Institute and community.

Responsibilities

Leading a research group.

Publishing research in peer reviewed journals.

Attending conferences, delivering presentations, and networking with others in the field.

Traveling to other universities or academic settings to engage and participate in learning opportunities and gain experience.

Developing courses and curricula, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.

Assisting with student recruitment, interviews, and academic counseling sessions.

Contributing to the creation of an environment that promotes growth, equality, and freedom of speech.

Participating in committee, departmental, and faculty meetings, as well as other service activities.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Established record of published peer-reviewed articles.
