Assistant Store Manager

Location: St. Joseph, MO

Pay: $16.00 per hour

Job Type: Full-Time

Schedule: 40 hours per week, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled

About the Role

Join The Salvation Army in Doing the Most Good as an Assistant Store Manager . In this leadership role, you'll support the Store Manager in overseeing daily retail operations, staff supervision, production, sales performance, customer service, safety compliance, and store presentation.

This position is ideal for candidates with retail leadership experience who enjoy developing teams, driving store performance, and making a positive impact in their community. Through your work, you'll help generate critical funding that supports The Salvation Army's life-changing programs and services.

What You'll Do

Leadership & Team Development

Assist with training, coaching, and supervising store staff

Provide leadership and guidance during daily operations

Support employee development and promote a positive team culture

Assist with staffing, scheduling, and operational planning

Help ensure policies and procedures are consistently followed

Store Operations & Sales

Support the implementation of strategies to achieve production and sales goals

Assist in managing day-to-day store operations

Monitor store performance and identify opportunities for improvement

Help maintain appropriate inventory flow and merchandise availability

Support loss prevention efforts and product control procedures to minimize shrinkage

Store Appearance & Safety

Ensure the store is clean, organized, safe, and customer-ready

Assist in maintaining attractive merchandising and displays

Support compliance with OSHA regulations and Salvation Army safety policies

Monitor facility conditions and communicate maintenance needs

Customer Experience & Community Relations

Deliver exceptional customer service and create a positive shopping environment

Support customer retention and community engagement initiatives

Address customer concerns professionally and effectively

Represent The Salvation Army positively in the community

Support and uphold The Salvation Army's mission and values

Administrative Responsibilities

Assist with banking procedures and daily financial processes

Maintain operational records and required documentation

Provide information for employee evaluations and corrective actions

Communicate regularly with the Store Manager regarding store operations

Complete additional duties and special projects as assigned

Training Provided

Paid training on store operations, register procedures, and management responsibilities

Leadership development and coaching from experienced retail managers

Qualifications

Required Education

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

Preferred Experience

Retail leadership, supervisory, or management experience preferred

Experience in customer service, merchandising, sales, or store operations

Cash handling, banking, and inventory management experience preferred

Skills & Abilities

Strong leadership and team-building skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to prioritize, multitask, and solve problems effectively

Customer-focused mindset

Basic computer proficiency, including Point of Sale (POS) systems

Strong organizational and time-management skills

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods

Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and lifting

Regularly lift and move up to 25 pounds

Ability to work in a retail environment with moderate noise levels

Exposure to seasonal temperature fluctuations and dusty conditions

Qualifications

Required

High School Diploma or equivalent

2 years retail experience (thrift experience a plus)

Valid Driver's License

Strong English communication skills

Basic computer proficiency including POS systems

Ability to pass pre-employment background check

Physical Requirements

Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity

Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds regularly

Occasional lifting up to 100 pounds

Capability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch as needed

Clear vision (close and distance) with ability to adjust focus

Schedule Requirements

Flexibility to work early shifts, late shifts, and most weekends

Available for occasional travel to various locations for work or training

Working Environment

Store environment with quiet to moderate noise level

May experience temperature fluctuations based on weather

Some exposure to dust
