Job description

Small Animal Veterinarian Job in Mahomet, Illinois

Mahomet Animal Hospital is hiring a Small Animal Associate Veterinarian to join our growing veterinary practice in Mahomet, Illinois, near Champaign and Urbana.

We are a private, veterinarian‑owned practice, not part of a corporate hospital group. Our decisions are made locally by people who understand our patients, clients, team, and community.

This is an on‑site general practice and surgery position for an experienced veterinarian who is comfortable working independently while being supported by a capable and dependable team. We are primarily looking for a full‑time veterinarian, but we will consider part‑time candidates who are a strong fit for our hospital.

Practice Independently Without Being Left Unsupported

If you want the freedom to manage your cases and make medical decisions without feeling like you have to do everything yourself, this may be the right opportunity for you.

Our support team includes three full‑time veterinary assistants, a practice manager, and a part‑time receptionist. They are experienced, capable, and able to take on a great deal, allowing the veterinarian to remain focused on patient care, diagnostics, treatment planning, surgery, and client communication.

We are looking for a doctor who can become a consistent and trusted presence within our small animal hospital. You will have the opportunity to build relationships with clients, establish continuity of care, and help our growing practice continue serving pets and families throughout Mahomet and the surrounding Central Illinois communities.

About Mahomet Animal Hospital

Mahomet Animal Hospital is a private, veterinarian‑owned small animal practice providing compassionate medical care for dogs and cats. Our hospital offers general veterinary care, preventive medicine, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, and other companion animal services.

We work with pet owners who have different needs, circumstances, and budgets. Our goal is to develop realistic treatment plans that respect each client’s situation while continuing to provide high‑quality veterinary care for every patient.

Because we are independently owned, our veterinarian has the ability to focus on thoughtful medical decisions, personal client relationships, and what is best for each individual patient.

Our Clinical Environment and Equipment

Our hospital provides the equipment, diagnostic capabilities, and support needed to manage a wide range of small animal cases. Our clinical resources include:

A dedicated surgical suite

Digital radiography

Dental equipment

In‑house laboratory equipment

In‑house cytology capabilities

Low‑stress handling techniques incorporated into patient care

AVImark practice‑management software

A knowledgeable and highly capable veterinary support team

Our in‑house capabilities allow the veterinarian to evaluate cases efficiently, develop informed treatment plans, and provide greater continuity of care for patients.

What You Will Do

As an Associate Veterinarian, you will provide general medical and surgical care for small animal patients. Responsibilities include:

Performing comprehensive wellness and sick‑patient examinations

Diagnosing and treating medical conditions in dogs and cats

Developing practical, individualized treatment plans

Performing cytology and fine‑needle aspirates

Evaluating urine and other fluid samples

Interpreting digital radiographs and diagnostic results

Performing general veterinary surgery

Creating and following appropriate treatment protocols

Communicating medical findings and recommendations clearly to clients

Helping clients make informed decisions based on their pets’ needs and available budgets

Communicating and collaborating with veterinary assistants, management, and reception staff

Maintaining accurate medical records through AVImark

What We Are Looking For

This position is best suited for a confident small animal veterinarian who is comfortable managing appointments, diagnostics, treatment plans, and surgery with limited supervision.

Required qualifications include:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent

Active Illinois veterinary license or eligibility to obtain one

At least one year of veterinary clinical experience

Experience practicing small animal or companion animal medicine

Confidence and competence in general veterinary surgery

Strong examination and diagnostic skills

Clear and compassionate client communication

Effective communication with veterinary support staff

Ability to work independently and make sound medical decisions

Willingness to work with clients from a variety of backgrounds and budgets

Commitment to providing high‑quality and realistic patient care

Schedule

The veterinarian’s schedule will fall within our regular clinic hours:

Monday through Friday

Clinic hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

No regularly scheduled Saturday or Sunday shifts

Full‑time preferred

Part‑time schedule considered for the right candidate

Weekend work is not routinely required. The only exception would be the uncommon situation in which the veterinarian hospitalizes a patient who needs continued care over the weekend. In that case, the attending veterinarian would be responsible for ensuring the patient receives appropriate follow‑up care.
