Summary

This position is located at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Response and Recovery, Response Directorate, Disaster Emergency Communication Division, Bothell MERS Detachment in Bothell, Washington. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience performing maintenance on heavy-duty diesel trucks and tractors, SUV's, Vans, and Light to Mid-weight Pickup Trucks.

Please visit www.fema.gov for additional information. EXCEPTED SERVICE: This is a full-time position in the Mobile Emergency Response Support (MERS) Detachment. MERS positions are in the excepted service. Employees will not acquire civil service status but will have standard and optional benefits. EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT: Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions. In this position, you will work as a Automotive Mechanic (Diesel) responsible for providing support for the FEMA Response Directorate. Typical duties include: Maintaining the detachment's fleet of vehicles consisting of SUV,s Vans, Cargo Trucks and Tractors. All requiring quarterly, and annual preventative maintenance (PM) or inspections. Maintaining a set of tools required to maintenance the fleet. To include ordering new or replacement tools, meters and diagnostics tools needed to maintain the fleet. Use own initiative to determine what tools are required. Performing scheduled PM's on all vehicles and equipment by following standard checklists, reference manuals, and schedules. Change oil and filters when required, to ensure all vehicles are fully mission capable (FMC). Seeking out ways to improve working area, equipment and ensuring assigned vehicles are always maintained in a high state of readiness. Using initiative to ensure safety is adhered to; maintenance checks are performed and upkeep of all areas of responsibility is maintained in a clean and orderly manner. Troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines, including fuel injection systems, turbochargers, cooling systems, lubrication systems, intake and exhaust systems, and associated components. Qualifications

The qualification requirements listed below must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standard. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Working Conditions: The work setting may vary from a properly equipped repair shop to an excessively hot, cold, windy, or wet outdoor environment. Hazards including high voltages, noxious fumes, sharp or abrasive objects, excessive noise, toxic substances, and slippery surfaces are likely to be encountered and 1lncumbent must follow stringent safety regulations Physical Effort: Incumbent must be capable of working effectively in a high-stress disaster environment, sometimes under less than desirable weather and living conditions, 7 days a week, 12 or more hours a day, for up to 30 days. The incumbent is required to undergo periodic physical examinations to satisfy the Commercial Driver's License requirements in the state of residence. Incumbent must be able to lift weights up to 45 pounds and be physically and mentally capable of performing all tasks and duties associated with a mechanic in a disaster response organization. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. NOTE: Qualifications are based on breadth/level of experience.
