Summary
This position is located within the Maintenance & Operations (M&O) Section of the Engineering Service at the Marion VA Medical Center in Marion, IL. The Automotive Worker performs skilled but less complex automotive repair and maintenance work on gas, diesel and electric-powered vehicles and small engine equipment under the direction of M&O supervisors.
Responsibilities
Major duties include but are not limited to: Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and routine servicing on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including electric and gas carts, maintenance trucks, passenger vehicles, mowers, small tractors, forklifts, grounds equipment, plows and portable engine powered devices; Performs basic inspections, filter changes, lubrication, replacing belts/hoses, simple adjustments, and operational checks; Performs maintenance and minor repairs on small engine equipment such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, sprayers, spreaders and generators; Cleans carburetors, replaces small mechanical components and conducts operational tests; Identifies readily apparent mechanical problems using standard tools and established procedures; Troubleshoots common malfunctions in engines, brakes, cooling systems and electrical components; Replaces standard parts such as batteries, spark plugs, sensors, alternators, belts, light assemblies, hoses and similar items; Troubleshoots hydraulic lifts, loading equipment and related mechanical systems; Performs operational checks and maintenance to ensure functional safety and reliability; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Considerable standing, stooping and bending is required. Climbing and working from ladders, step stools, or under car lifts in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions is necessary. Using hand tools necessitates considerable arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items up to 50 pounds are lifted and carried. Items over 50 pounds are infrequently carried or other assist in movement. Works both inside and outside. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, is exposed to bad weather and in wet or icy areas. Exposed to irritations and discomfort from dusts, grease, heat and fumes. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock and injuries from falls while positioning and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
