Job description

Bilingual Phlebotomist (Peekskill)The Bilingual Phlebotomist provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality, accurate samples are obtained with minimal discomfort for patients across a wide demographic. This role requires a professional who can clearly explain procedures, maintain meticulous documentation, and uphold strict safety and regulatory standards while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.ResponsibilitiesPerform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols.Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients in a bilingual capacity, helping them feel at ease.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.Package specimens securely for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transit.Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow protocol-specific procedures to ensure reliable test results.Understand and fully interpret physicians orders related to laboratory tests and specimen handling.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control guidelines in the laboratory and patient care areas.Wear appropriate professional and protective attire as required by safety and laboratory standards.Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, regulations, and best practices.Perform decontamination procedures and record maintenance data as required for equipment and work areas.Update patient information accurately in systems and records, ensuring proper documentation and traceability of specimens.Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in accordance with established procedures.Provide support for infant and pediatric blood draws when needed, using appropriate techniques and a gentle approach.Travel to different in-state locations as needed, adapting to various clinical settings while maintaining consistent quality of care.Essential Skills23 years of hands-on experience drawing blood in a clinical or laboratory setting.Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles.Demonstrated ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens in accordance with test orders and laboratory protocols.Strong administrative skills and attention to detail in documentation, labeling, and record keeping.Ability to clearly explain blood draw and specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous, professional manner.Capability to interpret and fully understand physicians orders related to laboratory testing.Experience with specimen processing, including packaging specimens for transport and maintaining specimen integrity.Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and general safety and infection control practices.Ability to handle telephone inquiries and communicate laboratory results following established guidelines.Comfort working with diverse patient populations, including pediatric and infant draws (infant and pediatric experience strongly preferred).Bilingual communication skills to effectively interact with a wide range of patients.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus.Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, requisitions, and patient records accurately.Ability to work independently across different clinical sites while maintaining consistent standards and procedures.Commitment to ongoing training and professional development through annual department trainings.Customer service mindset with the ability to put patients at ease and provide a positive experience during specimen collection.Work EnvironmentThis position is based in Peekskill and involves working in clinical and laboratory settings with in-state travel, making it ideal for candidates who enjoy a change of scenery. The typical schedule is 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, with rotating Saturday shifts from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The work environment includes handling blood and other specimens, operating centrifuges and related laboratory equipment, and adhering to strict safety and infection control protocols. Professional attire and appropriate protective gear are required in accordance with laboratory and safety standards. The role supports a culture of high-quality patient care, accuracy in specimen handling, and ongoing training, with no holiday or vacation work obligations noted in the description.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Peekskill, NY.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
