Job description
Location: (Remote/Virtual) | Based in Dallas, TX
The world measures human worth in productivity. Chronic illness interrupts it. Ill Boss exists in that gap.
Ill Boss is a Dallas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that educates, empowers, and advocates for people living with chronic and invisible illness. We center rare disease patients, conditions that disproportionately affect women, and conditions that disproportionately affect Black women, and we build free tools, community, and direct financial relief for people whose bodies have changed what's possible.
We're newly formed (incorporated in Texas April 13, 2026; IRS determination received May 2026; EIN ). The directors who join now will help shape how this organization is governed from the ground up.
What we've built so far
The Boss Community: peer support on Discord
My Health Advocate: a free tool for health tracking and appointment prep
The Field Guide and Education Initiative: advocacy guides and condition spotlights
Boss Boxes: free care packages, shipped monthly
Community Emergency Relief Fund: direct financial relief, supported by our Founding 25 campaign (our first $1,000 of impact by December 31, 2026)
Who we're looking for
We have up to 7 open seats and we're especially seeking:
Finance or accounting experience: nonprofit finance, bookkeeping, audit, or treasurer-level oversight
Nonprofit governance or legal experience
Healthcare or medicine, including public health and patient advocacy
Marketing or communications
Community organizing
Entrepreneurship or business experience
Lived experience with chronic, invisible, or rare illness, as a patient or caregiver. We especially welcome Black women and rare disease patients.
Independent directors, meaning no family or financial ties to the founder
You don't need prior board experience, but you do need to show up and follow through.
What board service looks like
Term: Two years, renewable
Meetings: At least four regular meetings a year plus an annual meeting, all with remote participation. We ask directors to attend at least 75% of meetings.
Time commitment: Approximately 2–4 hours per month
Giving: We ask for 100% board participation in giving, at any level that's meaningful to you. There is no minimum.
Compensation: Board service is unpaid. Reasonable expenses may be reimbursed with prior board approval.
Responsibilities: Directors uphold the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience, review financial statements, disclose conflicts of interest annually, and represent Ill Boss in their networks.
Built for access. Our bylaws build in remote participation, and medically necessary absences are not penalized as long as directors stay engaged. We designed our board for people with fluctuating energy because that's who we are.
