Job description
Basic Purpose:
Under the guidance and mentorship of the Body Shop Manager and experienced technicians, the Body Shop Technician Apprentice will gain hands-on experience in vehicle body repair and refinishing. The apprentice will assist in assessing, repairing, and restoring company vehicles to factory specifications while developing the skills necessary for a successful career in the trade.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Assist in estimating parts costs and labor for cosmetic and structural repairs on company vehicles.
Support senior technicians in removing and reinstalling vehicle body parts, including upholstery, accessories, and electrical components.
Learn and perform basic welding, riveting, and bolting techniques under supervision.
Assist in replacing and installing vehicle glass windows.
Gain hands-on experience using hand tools and power tools to repair and adjust major vehicle body components.
Help prepare vehicle evaluation reports for the safety and maintenance department.
Learn proper techniques for restoring damaged vehicle frames and body sections to factory standards.
Assist in vehicle painting and finishing processes, including prepping surfaces and applying protective coatings.
Comply with all safety standards, including FCMSA, OSHA, and company safety regulations.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned while growing technical expertise.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Enrollment in or completion of a vocational or technical school program in auto body repair is preferred.
Experience, Knowledge & Skills: Prior experience in auto body repair, painting, or a mechanical shop setting is a plus but not required.
Strong willingness to learn and develop skills in the body shop trade.
Ability to use good judgment and follow detailed instructions.
Must be dependable and punctual.
Ability to lift and carry objects up to 75 lbs.
Comfortable working at various heights on fleet vehicles.
Basic understanding of hand and power tools used in body repair.
Must be able to pass HIOSH-required respirator testing.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred but not required.
