Job description
Braille Transcriber PositionWe are seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented Braille Transcriber to join our educational support team. In this role, you will help provide blind and visually impaired students with access to classroom materials by converting assignments, tests, reading materials, and other educational resources into Braille and tactile formats.No prior Braille knowledge? No problem! We are willing to provide and fund Braille transcription training and certification for the right candidate who possesses strong foundational skills, patience, attention to detail, and a commitment to student success.Core ResponsibilitiesComplete paid Braille transcription training and certification coursework within the agreed timeline.Transcribe classroom assignments, tests, reading materials, and other educational materials into Braille.Assist with the creation of large-print and tactile graphics materials.Use Braille translation software, scanners, embossers, and other specialized equipment.Proofread materials to ensure accuracy and timely completion.Work under the direction of the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI).Collaborate with classroom teachers and school staff to ensure materials are prepared and available when needed.Gather and distribute materials to assigned school locations.Maintain confidentiality and follow applicable school, state, and federal guidelines.Participate in ongoing professional development to advance Braille and technology skills.Key Requirements & Basic Skills NeededStrong Literacy & Language Skills: Good understanding of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting.Attention to Detail: Ability to review materials carefully and maintain a high level of accuracy.Technology Proficiency: Comfortable using computers and standard software, with an ability to learn specialized Braille technology.Patience & Adaptability: Ability to work patiently with students and adapt to changing classroom needs.Self-Motivated & Organized: Ability to manage assignments, meet deadlines, and work independently.High School Diploma or Equivalent.Valid Ohio Driver's License and reliable transportation to travel between assigned school locations.Preferred: Experience as a classroom aide/paraprofessional, experience working with students who are visually impaired, or college coursework in education, child development, linguistics, or a related field.Benefits & Paid TrainingEmployer-Funded Training: Braille training and certification costs are covered by the employer.Paid Learning Hours: Earn your regular hourly wage while completing required training.Professional Development: Ongoing opportunities to build specialized Braille and technology skills.Career Advancement: Opportunity to advance to the Transcriber pay rate upon successful completion of NFB certification.Comprehensive health, dental, and retirement options for eligible full-time employees.SalarySalary: Based on experience, education, and certification.Candidates may begin at the Aide pay rate and advance to the Braille Transcriber pay rate upon successful completion of NFB certification.How to ApplySubmit your résumé and a brief cover letter explaining why you are interested in this specialized educational support role and your willingness to participate in Braille training and certification.For more information, please contact:Sue Campbell Greene County Educational Service Center
