Job description
The Branch Manager is responsible for the administration and efficient daily operation of a full-service retail banking branch, including branch operations, client service, product sales, employee leadership, security, safety, and regulatory compliance. This onsite position leads branch performance, develops employees, strengthens client relationships, and drives deposit and revenue growth.
The successful candidate will combine strong branch operations expertise with proven sales leadership, team development, business development, and client service capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Management and Team Development
Hire, onboard, train, and develop qualified employees while maintaining staffing levels that support exceptional client service.
Meet with direct reports at least monthly to discuss team needs, performance, development goals, and documented coaching opportunities.
Ensure employees receive appropriate training in sales, service, banking operations, security, and safety procedures.
Promote core deposit growth through branch sales initiatives and performance management.
Monitor branch trends, including deposit balances, transaction volume, cost of funds, and significant changes in client relationships.
Communicate organizational updates, policy changes, procedures, and branch priorities to employees and conduct related training.
Address performance concerns promptly and consistently in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Complete annual performance and compensation reviews for direct reports.
Maintain current knowledge of security and safety requirements and ensure employees follow established controls.
Branch Operations and Compliance
Communicate branch profitability goals and implement cost controls, income-generation initiatives, and local marketing efforts.
Monitor expenses and branch performance against budget expectations.
Partner with branch operations leadership to complete and review monthly certification packages before submission.
Maintain accountability for branch audit results and compliance with operating procedures, policies, and applicable regulations.
Ensure operational quality control and initiate corrective action when exceptions or deficiencies are identified.
Direct daily branch operations and approve large deposits, withdrawals, and required daily reports within assigned authority.
Review NSF and overdraft reports and approve or decline exceptions within established transaction approval limits.
Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal banking regulations and internal policies.
Client Service and Retention
Model and reinforce exceptional client service through coaching, meetings, presentations, and performance feedback.
Manage mystery shop results and coach employees to achieve branch service goals.
Create a welcoming, professional, and client-focused branch environment.
Resolve client concerns proactively before escalation to senior management.
Handle complex consumer and business account transactions and servicing needs.
Assist clients with account maintenance and resolve challenging situations with professionalism and diplomacy.
Perform branch functions as needed and serve as a resource for complex account servicing matters.
Sales Leadership and Business Development
Develop and execute sales, relationship-building, and community engagement strategies aligned with branch goals.
Use outbound calling, scheduled appointments, in-person meetings, networking, and community events to generate new relationships.
Analyze the local market and implement sales strategies that increase new accounts and deposits.
Coach branch employees on consultative sales skills and product knowledge.
Ensure employees profile client needs to identify opportunities to deepen relationships and recommend relevant products and services.
Develop tactical prospecting and cross-selling plans for new and existing clients.
Partner with area and regional sales leadership on joint marketing and cross-selling initiatives.
Refer small-business credit opportunities and coordinate with lending partners during the application process.
Coach employees to generate high-quality internal referrals.
Community Relations
Support Community Reinvestment Act programs and participate in relevant professional, civic, and community organizations.
Complete a minimum of 10 CRA volunteer hours annually. Volunteer activities are generally scheduled during business hours; approved time and mileage are compensated.
Represent the branch professionally in the local business community.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manage two or more branch employees.
Provide ongoing operational guidance, training, coaching, and professional development.
Assess employee performance, address performance management matters, and complete midyear and annual evaluations.
Manage employee schedules and verify accurate timecards.
Promote accountability for sales, service, operational, and compliance objectives.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of seven years of experience in a retail banking branch environment.
Minimum of five years of branch management experience.
Minimum of three years of experience managing complex business and consumer accounts.
Demonstrated sales ability and documented branch growth.
Experience hiring, training, coaching, developing, and managing employee performance.
Strong leadership, team-building, and client service capabilities.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and banking software applications.
Ability to work flexible hours, including beyond regularly scheduled hours when business needs require.
Current California driver's license and access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage for business travel.
Preferred Qualifications
Active involvement in local business or community organizations, such as a chamber of commerce or service organization.
Notary Public commission.
