Job description

Campus Safety Assistant-ElementaryUnder the supervision of site administrator, or designee, provides supervision to students during periods of morning drop off, recess, lunch, and end of day release; monitors parking areas and guides parking lot traffic. Ensures students comply with the health and safety regulations adopted by the District and the respective school site. Distinguishing characteristics between related classes positions allocated to the Campus Safety Assistant-Elementary job class are responsible for campus supervision in lunch and playground areas on an elementary school campus, while positions allocated to the Campus Safety Assistant-Secondary job class are primarily responsibility for student safety at a middle or high school campus.Essential duties/responsibilities include patrolling and monitoring an assigned District school campus area and/or property to maintain order, safety and security; assisting students in the cafeteria in receipt of meals and/or facilitating the formation of lunch lines; helping younger students with lunch trays, milk and condiments opening; ensuring students are eating in appropriate manner; assisting students with and participating in cleaning up lunch areas including spills, disposing of trash, wiping tables; assisting in conflict resolution to resolve conflicts according to established guidelines; intervening as necessary; advising students of consequences of rules which are violated; taking action to prevent or break up fights and disturbances; escorting students to office for disciplinary action as necessary; issuing equipment approved for use in lunch time outdoor activities; maintaining reasonable order in games and play activities; evaluating student injuries, determining course of action, performing minor first aid and completing required paperwork in compliance with District policy(ies); enforcing school and District rules, regulations and policies for the safety and security of students, staff and property; reporting unusual activities or unauthorized persons on campus to appropriate personnel; monitoring campus for unauthorized personnel entry; checking for visitors' passes and directing/escorting general public to the administration office, in accordance with campus sign-in procedures; encouraging and promoting courtesy among students; reporting cases of unusual behavior or other problems; observing and reporting safety hazards; preventing students from engaging in unsafe activities; identifying, correcting and/or reporting safety hazards that may compromise student/staff safety; monitoring parking lots for proper parking procedures and traffic flow, opening and securing gates; assisting with crowd control at school events; assisting in custodial duties, may wipe tables and benches in cafeteria and/or outside eating areas; performing related duties as assigned.Minimum entrance qualifications include any combination of education and experience that will provide the ability to meet the minimum qualifications and perform the essential functions of the position. Some experience working with school-aged children highly desirable. First aid and CPR certification is highly desirable. Alternate variations of education/experience may be considered by Personnel Commission staff as acceptable to qualify for participation in the examination process resulting in an eligibility list. When appropriate additional work experience beyond the minimum requirement may be supplemented for required minimum education requirements. Licenses/certifications/special requirements include valid first-aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificates shall be obtained for permanency in this classification (within 6 months of employment) and must be renewed as necessary during employment. Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.Job competencies include knowledge of general knowledge of campus safety and security; age appropriate communication strategies; fundamentals in first aide and response to various common student injuries; conflict resolution techniques amongst school-age children; district and school policies, rules and procedures; health and safety regulation, including basic first aid, CPR, AED and blood borne pathogens. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; be courteous and respectful of others; exercise good judgment, exhibit integrity and resourcefulness; communicate and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including students; work outdoors in all types of weather; diffuse confrontations and discourage violence and vandalism; understand and respond appropriately to emergency procedures.Nondiscrimination in employment: The CVUSD Governing Board is committed to providing equal opportunity for all individuals in district programs and activities. Employee contribution amount towards a premium varies based on medical plan. Family coverage is also available with an additional employee monthly paid premium. Note: Employees with assignments fewer than 27.5 hours per week are eligible to participate / buy-in into medical plans at full cost. Dental insurance: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 30.0 or more hours per week shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family dental insurance. Vision care insurance: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 30.0 or more hours per week shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family vision insurance. Holidays: Up to fourteen paid holidays per year. Life insurance: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 30.0 or more hours per week shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family life insurance. Vacation: Employees with one to three years of service earn 12 vacation days per year (employees working less than 12 months shall earn vacation on a pro rata basis). The number of vacation days earned increases with longevity up to 20 days per year after 15 years of service. Sick leave: One day per month, cumulative from year to year (employees working less than 12 months shall earn sick leave on a pro rata basis). Retirement: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 4 or more hours daily AND at least 20 hours weekly are covered by Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Employees holding positions that are fewer than 4 hours per day or 20 hours per week are enrolled in APPLE, an alternative to Social Security. Contributions are made by both the employee and employer. Salary step movement: First day of fiscal year (July 1st) for those employees in working status at least 75% of work year. Longevity compensation: Upon completion of 7, 10, 14, 20, 24, and 29 years of service from the hire date, employees receive an additional 2 1/2% salary increase. Representation: Classified staff (with the exception of Campus Safety Assistants) are represented by Chapter 620, CSEA.
