Job description

CarpenterPerforms high-quality carpentry in a variety of settings, including the maintenance and alteration of academic, athletic, and dormitory structures and equipment, and the maintenance and repair of historic buildings. Performs skilled finish work ranging from repairing and rebuilding doors and windows to the construction and installation of cabinetry, countertops, and furniture, drywall, and other miscellaneous carpentry-related tasks. We strive to create a collaborative and inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong and are valued.Primary ResponsibilitiesPerforms systematic and routine maintenance and repairs to exterior and interior structural components of buildings, including walls, doors, windows, and roofsRepairs, adjusts, and replaces (as appropriate) door and window hardware including locks, door closures, weather stripping, windowpanes, and related componentsRepairs and maintains a variety of furniture ranging from historic pieces to modular office systemsInstalls cabinets and other wood trim requiring advanced carpentry skillsPerforms minor remodeling to offices, student dormitories, and college-owned faculty/staff housingRepairs a variety of floors including hardwood, ceramic, quarry tile, and vinyl compositionPerforms regular roof inspectionsKeeps supervisor informed of all substandard and unsafe structural componentsAbility to learn and maintain electronic door lock systemsLifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, climbing ladders, and working from and operating elevated mobile platforms (scaffolding, lifts)Responds to after-hours emergencies as an emergency response team member or individually for access control support, snow removal, etc.Core CompetenciesTeamwork - Exhibits objectivity and openness to others' views; Gives and welcomes feedback.Oral and Written Communication - Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; Listens and gets clarification; Writes clearly and informatively.Adaptability - Adapts to changes in the work environment.Attendance/Punctuality - Is consistently at work and on time.Dependability - Follows instructions, responds to management direction.Planning/Organizing - Uses time efficiently.Safety and Security - Observes safety and security procedures; Uses equipment and materials properly.Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or equivalent (GED)Five years of experience in the carpentry trade with journeyman-level carpentry skillsAbility to communicate effectively and positively in a diverse work environmentAbility to effectively work independently or in teamsAbility to use all power and handheld carpentry tools safely and effectivelyAbility to solve problems and recommend appropriate solutionsAbility to use WO ticketing system on a tablet or computerMust be capable of working indoors and outdoors throughout the year, periodically in inclement weather.Physical fitness with no physical limitations: Must be able to lift 80 lbs., and carry 70 lbs.; ability to climb and assist in moving 40ft ladders, in accordance with job analysis and physician's approval during pre-employment job physicalA valid driver's licenseThe statements above describe the general nature and level of work but are not a complete list of responsibilities and are subject to change at the discretion of Principia.Compensation and BenefitsWe offer a competitive starting salary range for this position commensurate with experience and qualifications.In addition to salary, our comprehensive total rewards package includes:Generous Employee Tuition Discount: Enjoy a 90% discount on tuition (pro-rated for part-time staff) for your eligible children enrolled from Pre-K3 through College (infant and acorn programs excluded).Relocation: Principia provides a relocation imbursement of up to 12% of your annual salary, when moving from outside a radius of more than 50 miles.Professional Development: Access to learning opportunities, training programs, and career growth support.Comprehensive Benefits: Learn more about all our benefits here, including comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans, paid time off, a 403(b) retirement plan with Principia matching, and more.Equal OpportunityPrincipia, a mission-driven institution, believes every person has the right to an equitable and respectful educational environment and workplace.
