Job description

Position Summary

Looking for a driving role where you don’t have to do heavy manual loading all day? As a Residential Automated CDL Driver, you'll command a high-tech, automated side-loader (ASL) truck, collecting solid waste and recyclables across Durham neighborhoods. You get the independence of solo driving paired with the convenience of hydraulic controls right from the cab.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

Master the Controls: Safely operate a fully automated side-loading truck and hydraulic system along designated residential routes.

Keep Durham Running Smoothly: Collect solid waste and recyclables efficiently while providing friendly, courteous service to local residents.

Prioritize Safety First: Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections daily. Comply with all DOT, federal, state, and company safety regulations.

Maintain the Fleet: Keep your cab clean, monitor vehicle performance, and immediately report any mechanical needs to the maintenance team.

Stay Connected: Complete daily route sheets and logs, work with supervisors to optimize routing efficiencies, and participate in safety and branch meetings.

Qualifications & Requirements

License: Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class A or B.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of commercial driving experience OR a certificate from an accredited CDL school.

Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.

Driving Skills: Demonstrated ability to safely operate heavy commercial equipment, maneuver in tight residential spaces, and back up distances of 120+ feet using mirrors.

Safety Focus: Ability to meet company safety criteria and identify unacceptable/hazardous materials (e.g., flammables or liquid waste).

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Comfortable spending ~75% of the day driving and operating cab controls.

Ability to occasionally lift/move objects up to 50 lbs repetitively using proper technique (and up to 100 lbs on rare occasions).

Ability to work outdoors in various NC weather conditions (heat, rain, cold) and around typical traffic noise and moving equipment.

Why Join GFL?

Home Daily: Local routes mean you get to sleep in your own bed every night.

Modern Equipment: Drive well-maintained automated trucks equipped with advanced hydraulic systems.

Career Growth: Opportunities to advance within a rapidly growing North American environmental services leader.

Comprehensive Benefits: Competitive pay, health/dental/vision coverage, 401(k) retirement plans, paid time off, and boot allowances.

We thank you for your interest. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
