Responsibilities include:Report errors in the administration of medications.Assist in programs of the facility that seek to determine what medication errors are taking place, when, where, and why they occur, and how they can be prevented.Maintain a friendly, productive, working relationship with other members of the department of nursing, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and any other facility committee or program that affects the medication pass and seeks to improve the performance and accuracy of the medication process.Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document the oral and/or topical medication per physician's orders.Assist in verifying that any medications brought into the facility by a newly admitted resident are examined and identified by the attending physician or the facility pharmacy or pharmacist.Follow the labeling policies and practices of the facility and ensure that all medications administered are properly labeled.Assist with medication charting as directed by the Nurse Supervisor.Follow facility policies and procedures regarding the destroying of medications.Assist in documenting and removing medications that are discontinued by the attending physician.Ensure that medication is returned and reordered except emergency drugs.Accurately measure, record, and report the vital signs of residents as indicated.Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed. Document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered, including reasons for refusal.Follow the facility procedure for recording the order in the resident's clinical record, including the type, route, dosage, frequency, and strength of each medication.Verify the identity of the resident before administering the medication treatment.Follow established guidelines concerning the storage of drugs and biologicals.Honor the resident's refusal of treatments or medications request and report to Nurse Supervisor.Attend departmental and staff meetings as directed or called.Attend and participate in in-service educational classes and on-the-job training programs, etc., as scheduled or directed.Qualifications Must possess a High School Diploma or its equivalent. Must be a licensed Certified Medication Aide having successfully completed a state approved training program and any necessary examinations in accordance with laws of this State. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must be knowledgeable of computer systems, system applications, and other equipment relative to pharmaceutical services. Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents. Must be trustworthy, holding residents medical and personal information in confidence at all times.
