Job description

Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist – Adolescent Neurodevelopmental Program

Nexus Children's Hospital – The Woodlands is seeking a Board-Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to provide psychiatric leadership and direct patient care within our specialized inpatient neurodevelopmental program.

This position will have a strong clinical focus on adolescents and young adults ages 16 and older, including individuals with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual and developmental disabilities, complex behavioral needs, and co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions.

This is an opportunity for a psychiatrist who enjoys working with a complex adolescent population and wants to practice within a highly collaborative interdisciplinary environment where psychiatric, behavioral, medical, nursing, rehabilitation, and case management services work together under one comprehensive treatment plan.

About Nexus Children's Hospital – The Woodlands

Nexus Children's Hospital – The Woodlands provides specialized inpatient care for children, adolescents, and young adults whose needs often extend beyond those of a traditional psychiatric or medical setting.

Our interdisciplinary programs serve patients with complex neurodevelopmental, behavioral, psychiatric, and medical conditions, with specialized programming designed to address the unique needs of adolescents and young adults.

What You'll Do

As the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, you will provide clinical and psychiatric leadership for the interdisciplinary treatment team while maintaining an active role in the assessment and treatment of patients.

Key responsibilities include:

Provide psychiatric evaluation and ongoing treatment for patients, with a significant emphasis on adolescents and young adults ages 16+.

Develop, monitor, and document individualized psychiatric treatment goals as part of each patient's master treatment plan.

Provide evidence-based psychopharmacological management for patients with complex psychiatric, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental conditions.

Evaluate the effectiveness of psychiatric, behavioral, and therapeutic interventions and make treatment recommendations as clinically indicated.

Lead regularly scheduled interdisciplinary treatment conferences and provide psychiatric direction regarding patient care.

Collaborate closely with physicians, psychiatric nurse practitioners, behavioral therapists, rehabilitation therapists, nurses, case managers, and other clinical professionals.

Provide oversight and direct supervision of psychiatric nurse practitioners caring for patients within the program.

Partner with the Neurodevelopmental Program Director to ensure clinical programming remains effective and consistent with established program guidelines.

Review prospective patients and provide clinical input regarding appropriateness for admission.

Participate actively in discharge planning and transitions to the next appropriate level of care.

Meet with families, guardians, referral sources, and payers as needed to discuss treatment progress, clinical recommendations, and discharge planning.

Provide clinical education and guidance to staff regarding effective strategies for caring for adolescents and young adults with complex behavioral, psychiatric, and medical needs.

Participate in ongoing program development and recommend improvements to treatment models and clinical programming.

Meet regularly with hospital leadership to review program performance, clinical needs, and future program development.

Participate in shared phone-based psychiatric on-call coverage with Nexus Physician Group for psychiatric emergencies involving patients within Nexus Health Systems.

Complete timely clinical documentation, orders, attestations, billing sheets, and physician time logs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

The Patient Population

This role is particularly well suited for a psychiatrist interested in caring for older adolescents and young adults with complex neurodevelopmental and behavioral needs.

Patients may present with:

Autism spectrum disorder

Intellectual and developmental disabilities

Significant behavioral dysregulation

Mood and anxiety disorders

ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions

Co-occurring psychiatric and medical diagnoses

Complex medication-management needs

Challenges requiring coordinated psychiatric, behavioral, medical, and rehabilitative intervention

Qualifications

Education

MD or DO from an accredited school of medicine.

Licensure & Certification

Current or eligible Texas medical license with authorization to practice psychiatry.

Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Current CPR certification, if applicable, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Must maintain all required licenses and certifications in good standing throughout employment.

Experience

Minimum of two years of direct clinical experience working with children and adolescents preferred.

Strong experience treating adolescents ages 16+ is highly preferred.

Experience with autism, intellectual/developmental disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders, or complex behavioral health populations is strongly preferred.

Previous clinical leadership, medical-director, supervisory, or interdisciplinary team leadership experience is preferred.

Why Nexus?

At Nexus, psychiatry is an integral part of a truly interdisciplinary model of care. Our physicians work alongside behavioral health, medical, nursing, rehabilitation, and case management professionals to address the full range of needs presented by patients with complex diagnoses.

For a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who wants to work beyond a traditional outpatient practice or psychiatric unit, this position offers the opportunity to help shape treatment for a unique and highly specialized 16+ adolescent and young-adult population while contributing to the continued development of Nexus's neurodevelopmental programming.

Join Nexus Children's Hospital – The Woodlands and help adolescents and young adults with complex needs achieve greater stability, independence, and quality of life.
