Job description
Library Circulation StaffCoordinates and performs a variety of circulation duties on behalf of the Longview Public Library; provides customer service to the public; responds to circulation and/or other types of library inquiries; updates and maintains patron account records; assists in maintaining library facilities, equipment, and collection materials; and performs other related duties as assigned.Examples Of DutiesStaffs the circulation desk and provides customer service to patrons in person and via telephone.Responds to various types of circulation and/or other general library inquiries; communicates and explains the Library's policies and procedures to the public.Performs a variety of circulation duties; issues library cards; prepares TexShare cards; checks items in and out; renews materials; processes hold and interlibrary loan requests.Monitors and notifies patrons of missing/damaged materials and/or other account issues.Collects and receipts library fees/fines and print/copy funds; receives monies for Friends of the Library book sales; balances and maintains cash register.Contacts patrons by telephone regarding the availability of requested items and/or returned mail.Inputs, updates, and maintains patron account information in the Library's computer system;Generates overdue notices and patron billing correspondence; places notes and blocks on library cards as required; researches and assists in resolving patron records issues.Instructs patrons in the use of library computers, equipment, catalogs, and databases; coordinates and teaches public computer classes as assigned.Assists patrons with basic reference inquiries and/or in locating library materials.Prepares items for shelving; places books and audiovisual items on display shelves; coordinates and performs shelf reading; identifies and recommends materials for purchase.Participates in cleaning and maintaining library facilities and equipment; empties book drops; performs opening and closing duties; delivers closing announcements.Participates in preparing newsletter articles; copies, folds, and maintains library brochures.Provides circulation training to other library personnel as assigned.Performs other related duties as assigned or required.Minimum RequirementsEducation and Experience:High School Diploma or equivalent, and two years circulation/customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.Required Licenses or Certifications:Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.Physical Demands/Work EnvironmentWork is performed in a public library environment.Subject to sitting, standing for extended periods of time, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds.Must be able to push/pull library carts and lift/carry library materials.BenefitsThe City of Longview does not offer benefits to part-time or temporary positions. However, instead of paying into Social Security the employee and the City will pay into an alternative retirement system that the employee will be able to access upon the termination of their part-time/temporary employment.
