Technical Engineer – Cloudflare/WAF Location: Lake County, IL 60085
Job Type: Contract – 3 Months
Start Date: ASAP
Schedule: Hybrid – 3 Days Onsite / 2 Days Remote
Hours: 32–40 hours/week, Monday–Friday
Extension: Potential for extension based on business needs and performance; not guaranteed.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Technical Engineer to support WAF migrations to Cloudflare and help strengthen web and cloud security environments.
The ideal candidate will have experience with WAF, network security, firewalls, Terraform/IaC, scripting, and web security fundamentals . Cloudflare experience is highly desirable, but candidates with strong WAF and network security backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
This role will work closely with Application, Security, Network, and Infrastructure teams to implement technical solutions, automate configurations, support production cutovers, troubleshoot issues, and provide post-cutover hypercare.
Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and provide operational support for WAF migrations to Cloudflare
Configure Cloudflare security and WAF rules based on application requirements.
Automate infrastructure and security configurations using Terraform/IaC and scripting
Support testing and validation of security and infrastructure changes.
Assist with production cutovers, traffic migration, monitoring, and hypercare
Troubleshoot and resolve escalated production and operational issues.
Partner with application owners to understand application architecture and security requirements.
Collaborate with Security, Network, Infrastructure, and Application teams.
Monitor project/task progress and communicate risks, issues, and status to stakeholders.
Identify opportunities to improve security engineering processes, automation, and tools.
Required Skills
1–3 years of IT or relevant technical experience.
Experience with WAF / Web Application Firewall
Knowledge of Network Security and Firewalls
Understanding of Web Security, and DNS
Experience with Terraform, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), or similar automation tools
Scripting/programming experience with Python, Bash, or similar
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Security, or a related field; equivalent experience/certifications will be considered.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
Hands-on Cloudflare experience.
Cloudflare WAF and security rule configuration.
AWS or Azure experience.
Experience with WAF or cloud security migrations.
Production cutover and hypercare experience.
Knowledge of OWASP and common web security vulnerabilities
Experience with Jenkins, GitLab, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or similar CI/CD tools.
Experience with REST APIs and automation.
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position based in Lake County, Illinois , requiring 3 days onsite and 2 days remote each week. Remote arrangements may be considered for exceptional candidates, although preference will be given to local candidates
Occasional weekend support may be required for production cutovers
