Job Summary
The CNC Operator sets up and operates computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines to produce precision machined parts according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role involves reading blueprints, loading programs, selecting proper tooling and cutting parameters, monitoring the machining process, and inspecting finished parts to ensure quality standards are met.
CNC Lathe Responsibilities: Set up CNC lathes, including loading tooling, work-holding fixtures, and raw stock
Load, edit, and run CNC programs; make minor offset adjustments as needed
Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering specifications
Measure and inspect finished parts using calipers, micrometers, and other precision instruments
Monitor machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions
Perform routine machine maintenance and keep the work area clean and organized
Maintain accurate production and quality records
Follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Communicate issues with tooling, materials, or programs to supervisors or programmers
CNC Mill Responsibilities: Set up CNC milling machines, including selecting and installing cutting tools, fixtures, and work-holding devices
Load raw material/stock and secure workpieces properly to ensure accuracy and safety
Load, edit, and run CNC programs; input or adjust tool offsets and work coordinates
Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and work orders to determine machining sequences
Select appropriate speeds, feeds, and tooling based on material type and part specifications
Monitor machining cycles to detect tool wear, vibration, or out-of-tolerance conditions
Inspect finished parts using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision instruments
Perform first-article inspections and in-process quality checks
Troubleshoot minor program or tooling issues; alert supervisors/programmers to recurring problems
Perform routine preventive maintenance and keep the machine and work area clean
Maintain accurate production logs, quality records, and scrap/rework documentation
Follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational training in machining preferred
1+ years of experience operating CNC lathes (entry-level candidates with relevant training may be considered)
Ability to read blueprints and use precision measuring tools
Basic understanding of G-code/M-code
Strong attention to detail and quality
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred Skills Experience with Fanuc, Haas, or Mazak controls
Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
Work Environment Manufacturing/shop floor setting
Exposure to noise, machine coolant, and metal shavings
PPE required (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, hearing protection)

-Walking, bending, squatting, reaching
-Regular use of hands, wrists, and fingers to handle small tools, deburring instruments, and precision components
-Ability to grip, hold, and manipulate parts using fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for extended periods
-Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 35 pounds regularly; occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs may be required
-Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection
-Must tolerate exposure to machining dust, oils, and moderate noise levels in a manufacturing environment
