Code Enforcement Officer/Health InspectorThe purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with city codes and ordinances through coordination of the abatement of violations. An individual in this position will serve as a Code Enforcement Officer, and coordinate activities related to the enforcement of City Codes on property maintenance, residential, commercial, signage, and health. The Code Enforcement Officer has frequent interaction with other City employees and the public.This position is safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individual(s) assigned to this position. The position description is subject to change by the city as the needs of the city and requirements of the position change.Performs food establishment inspections; enforces compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, plans, permits and/or regulationsSchedules and conducts inspections to ensure compliance with City Codes and Ordinances; documents discrepancies, writes reports, communicates results of inspections, and conducts follow-up inspectionsInspects food service establishments for compliance with codes and laws by making routine field inspections and prepares findings reports and possible corrective actionEnsure City records have accurate information regarding food service establishments and prepared reports.May conduct education in food service sanitation and safety for employeesCompiles statistical data and responsible for data entry for City filesInvestigates reports of code violations; generates code violation letters and citations as needed; documents violations and communicates status with citizensMay attend court to provide testimony related to the prosecution of code violationsLocate, remove, and dispose of illegal signs; write citation for illegal signsMaintains and updates data, records, files, and relevant documentation related to assignment areas; conducts basic research, collects data, and prepares activity logs and reportsCoordinates with other departments, agencies or organizations for special events, projects, or initiatives; reviews and approves requests for special events in the CityVisually inspects food service establishments for compliance with State legal requirements and City codes, investigates complaints related to State law and City ordinance violations, and prepares inspection findings and daily reports for department director and supervisor review.Coordinates the training of personnel; oversees the review of all sign permit applicationsPerforms other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.Applicable Federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations and/or ordinancesBasic inspection principles, practices, and proceduresCode enforcement techniquesCustomer service principlesSafety principles and safe work practicesSpecialized equipment relevant to area of assignmentModern office technology and equipmentutilize specialized equipment relevant to area of assignmentcommunicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiencesinterpret and apply applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standardsconduct inspections and monitor safety hazards or compliance concernsread and interpret plans, specifications and/or applicable technical documentationidentify and respond to compliance violations and safety concernsdetermine severity of compliance violationsprepare and issue notices, citations, or warningsprepare and maintain data, records, files, logs, and reportscoordinate with other departments or organizationsutilize modern office technology and equipment effectivelyEducation and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED requiredFour (4) year degree with thirty (30) hours of science preferred.Two (2) years of related experience in assigned area of responsibility.Valid Texas Driver's License in good standing. Texas Certified Basic Code Enforcement Officer license preferred. Registered Code Enforcement Certification preferred.Frequently requires balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, climbing to heights, seeing, repetitive motions and up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Occasionally requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. WORK ENVIRONMENT Employee may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, high noise levels, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, work space restrictions, travel and environmental conditions such as disruptive people, imminent danger or a threatening environment.
