Job description

Commercial Building InspectorAllen County Government is seeking an experienced Commercial Building Inspector to help ensure the safety, compliance, and integrity of commercial construction projects across our community. From new developments to major renovations, your expertise will help shape the buildings where people work, gather, and do business every day. This isn't just inspections—this is protecting the backbone of our community's growth.What You'll DoYou'll be at the center of commercial development in Allen County:Conduct inspections on commercial construction projects, including new builds, remodels, and renovationsEnsure compliance with local and state building codesWork closely with contractors, architects, and property owners to explain requirements and resolve violationsInvestigate complaints and address structural and safety concernsDocument inspections, prepare detailed reports, and track compliancePerform follow-up inspections to confirm corrective actionsInterpret and apply building codes across multiple disciplines (structural, electrical, plumbing, etc.)What You Bring to the TableYou've been in the field and understand how commercial projects come together:High School Diploma or GED8+ years of experience in commercial construction (concrete, roofing, siding, drywall, or related fields)Valid Allen County Contractor License, Inspector Certification, ability to achieve license within 12 months from hire.Working knowledge of structural, electrical, plumbing, and safety codesAbility to read and interpret blueprints and construction plansStrong communication skills—you can work effectively with contractors and design professionalsBasic computer skills (Microsoft Office and reporting tools)Basic math and measurement skillsValid Driver's LicenseWhat Makes You Stand OutYou understand the complexity of commercial construction projectsYou can confidently navigate conversations with contractors and design teamsYou bring a practical, solutions-focused approach to code enforcementYou're detail-oriented but able to see the big pictureWhat to ExpectInspections at active commercial construction sites in all weather conditionsExposure to large-scale projects and complex buildsPhysical activity including climbing, bending, lifting, and navigating uneven terrainDetailed reporting and documentation responsibilitiesOn-call availability for two weeks per yearWhy Allen County?Be part of the growth and development of your local communityStable, full-time role with a respected government organizationOpportunity to apply your construction experience in a high-impact technical roleWork alongside professionals committed to quality, safety, and accountabilityIf you've worked in commercial construction and are ready to take your experience to the next level—this is your opportunity to step into a role where your knowledge helps shape the future of Allen County.Please complete the application accurately and thoroughly.
