Probation Officer
Essential Functions
Establishes and maintains accurate case files through significant documentation, data entry, and scanning in the CSCD's computerized offender case management system.
Interviews probationers and/or defendants on supervision who are court-ordered to perform community service restitution (CSR) with the purpose of determining the skills and abilities of the individual.
Assigns probationers and/or defendants to perform CSR hours with community non-profit agencies which corresponds with the CSCD's CSR Program.
Tracks progress and informs Community Supervision Officers (CSOs) and probationers and/or defendants of progress, noncompliance, and successfully completion of CSR Program.
Monitors, verifies and enters program participation information of probationers and/or defendants officially assigned to the CSCD's CSR Program.
Responds to telephone inquiries from agencies, probationers and/or defendants, and CSOs.
Prepares and updates all Community Service Restitution (CSR) records in the CSCD's computerized offender case management system in a timely fashion upon receipt of records from the assigned agency.
Plans and implements special projects through collaborative efforts with community nonprofit agencies.
Maintains up to date Reciprocal Agreements with non-profit agencies utilized.
Consults with CSOs to determine program participant eligibility.
Identifies, recruits, and makes regular professional presentations to nonprofit agencies within the community.
Conducts agency site visits as assigned.
Provides testimony regarding client's participation in the CSR Program when required in Court(s).
Responds to telephone inquiries from agencies, participants, CSOs, the Courts, and other CSCD Staff.
Recommends program procedures and policies changes to CSCD administration.
Prepares correspondence for participants and CSR agency providers.
Prepares and submits statistical reports on the number of CSR hours completed and the fiscal impact the community service program provides the community.
Regular attendance and timeliness are required.
Participates in special projects and performs other related duties as assigned by assigned Staff Operations Manager, Deputy Director and/or CSCD Director.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Required:
High school diploma and/or GED
Associate's degree (preferred)
SKILLS ~ EXPERIENCE: Required:
Knowledge of laws related the application of community service restitution
Knowledge of Community Justice Assistance Division's (CJAD) standards regarding community service restitution programs
Effective interpersonal skills in dealing with offenders, public, and co-workers
Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks with competing priorities and deadlines
Ability to use sound analytical reasoning to solve difficult or complex problems
Documented willingness to work and to exceed minimum expectations
Ability and means to travel as needed
Willingness to adhere to policies of the CSCD and support the CSCD Administration despite pressure exerted by others
Effective conflict resolution skills
Ability to cooperate and collaborate with others of diverse backgrounds, cultures, or interests
Demonstrated ability to contribute to a workplace culture that is consistent with and emphasizes the CSCD's Mission, Vision, and Values
Must have a valid Texas Driver's License
Must provide proof of current automobile liability insurance
Must have a working and reliable vehicle

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter:
Works indoors and outdoors
Comes in contact with criminal courts, courthouse personnel, law enforcement and community agencies
Works with individuals who are on supervision for felony and/or misdemeanor offenses
Requires a 40-hour week (Monday through Friday) under potentially stressful conditions (This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the CSCD.)
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
Reading procedures, policies, standards, case files, reports, etc.
Reading, bending, sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, speaking, hearing, lifting case files, significant computer data entry, ability to manage stress in meeting deadlines and change, and other physical efforts as required. Office work requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing, moderate lifting, and walking.
Conducts site visits at community service agencies on a regular basis
HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Regular schedule is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the facility.
