Hammett Excavation, Inc. | Dodd City, TX | Full-Time | In-Office | Reports to the CFO
Hammett Excavation, Inc. is an excavation and earthwork contractor headquartered in Dodd City, Texas. Founded in 1963, the company brings more than 60 years of experience to projects across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, and Colorado. Hammett delivers residential and commercial excavation, mass excavation and site development for data centers, commercial roadwork, landfill excavation, and aggregate hauling. Its fleet of more than 400 pieces of equipment, its team of more than 375 people, and its use of GPS, drone, and topographic modeling technology support that work. Hammett Excavation is committed to doing every project right the first time and keeping clients on time and on budget, through safety, quality workmanship, and a team-oriented approach that adapts to every job. As the company continues to grow, it is building careers for people who want to be part of large-scale, technically advanced work.
About the Role
Hammett Excavation is hiring a Controller to lead all accounting and financial reporting. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will own the monthly close, job cost accuracy, cash management, and internal controls, and give our leadership team timely, reliable financial insight that drives profitable growth. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build and lead an internal accounting function inside a well-established company.
What You’ll Do
Lead the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and job cost accounting
Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and produce accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Prepare monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, over and under billing analysis, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
Maintain accurate job cost structures and coding, partnering with project managers and estimators to track labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor costs
Track equipment costs, utilization, depreciation, and internal equipment rates across a fleet of more than 400 pieces of equipment
Manage progress billing, retainage, lien waivers, and collections to protect cash flow
Develop and maintain the annual budget, rolling forecasts, and a 13-week cash flow forecast
Oversee payroll for more than 375 team members, including certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting as applicable
Design, document, and enforce internal controls, approval workflows, and accounting policies
Manage relationships with external CPAs, auditors, banks, sureties, and insurance providers, including bonding capacity and covenant reporting
Coordinate sales, use, and payroll tax compliance and support annual audit, review, and tax preparation
Deliver KPI dashboards and financial analysis to the CFO and leadership team, with recommendations to improve margin and efficiency
Hire, train, and develop accounting staff while improving systems, automation, and reporting tools as the company grows
What Success Looks Like
Monthly financial statements, including WIP and job profitability reports, are closed accurately and delivered to leadership within 10 business days of month end
Job costing is accurate across our Commercial, Residential, Landfill, and Hauling divisions, giving project leaders and executives a clear view of margin, fade, and cost-to-complete on every job
Cash flow, billing, and collections are forecasted and managed proactively, internal controls are documented and followed, and annual audits, reviews, and tax filings are completed on time with no material adjustments
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller in construction, excavation, heavy civil, or another equipment-intensive contracting business
Deep knowledge of job costing, WIP, and percentage-of-completion accounting
Advanced proficiency with construction accounting software such as Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, or Spectrum, and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to partner with owners, executives, field leaders, and external financial partners
Highly accurate and detail-oriented, with exceptional standards for financial integrity and discretion with confidential information
Preferred
Experience with Viewpoint Vista
Full-time, in-office role based at our headquarters in Dodd City, Texas
Primarily sedentary work with extended periods of sitting and computer use, and occasional visits to job sites and equipment yards
Occasional travel for banking, audit, or business meetings, and flexibility for extended hours during month end, year end, and audit periods
A 60+ year company in an active, well-funded growth phase
A seat close to executive leadership, reporting directly to the CFO
The opportunity to build an accounting function, not just maintain one
A culture that still feels like family, backed by the structure of a company scaling toward $250M+ in revenue
