About the Job

GOAT USA is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting operations and support the continued growth of our business. This role will oversee the accuracy and integrity of our financial reporting, including the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, inventory accounting, accounts payable and receivable, tax compliance, audits, and internal controls. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, hands-on NetSuite experience, and a deep understanding of inventory and multi-channel retail businesses. As the leader of the Accounting function, the Controller will develop scalable processes and controls, lead and develop the accounting team, and partner across the organization to ensure our financial infrastructure continues to evolve as GOAT USA grows across retail, e-commerce, wholesale, events, and other channels.

Job Purpose:

The Controller is responsible for leading GOAT USA’s accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the Company’s financial records and reporting. This role oversees the general ledger, monthly and year-end close processes, financial statements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory accounting, cash management, payroll accounting, tax compliance, reconciliations, and internal financial controls.

The Controller will establish and maintain scalable accounting policies, procedures, and controls that support GOAT USA’s continued growth across retail, e-commerce, wholesale, events, and other business channels. This position will partner closely with executive leadership and department leaders to provide accurate financial information, identify risks and opportunities, improve financial processes, and support informed business decisions.

As the leader of the Accounting function, the Controller is responsible for developing and managing the accounting team, establishing clear expectations and deadlines, and ensuring financial activities are completed accurately and efficiently. The Controller will also serve as a primary point of contact for external accounting firms, auditors, tax advisors, financial institutions, tax software providers, and applicable state and regulatory agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead GOAT USA’s day-to-day accounting operations and ensure financial transactions are recorded completely, accurately, and in accordance with established accounting policies and applicable accounting standards.

Lead the monthly and year-end close processes, establishing appropriate close calendars, deadlines, reconciliations, reviews, and controls to ensure timely and accurate reporting.

Oversee the general ledger, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other accounting activities.

Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, including invoicing, collections, vendor payments, aging, schedules, credit cards reconciliations, and related controls.

Ensure inventory balances, movements, adjustments, reserves, write-offs, and cost of goods sold are accurately recorded and reconciled.

Oversee accounting for product costs, freight, duties, and other applicable costs to ensure inventory and cost of goods sold are accurately stated in NetSuite.

Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of sales, returns, discounts, gift cards, loyalty programs, sales tax, payment processors and merchant fees for all GOAT USA’s sales channels

Review balance sheet accounts and supporting schedules and ensure reconciling items are researched and resolved in a timely manner.

Establish, document, implement, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and approval processes to safeguard GOAT USA and reduce financial risk.

Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting processes, reporting, reconciliations, and financial controls as GOAT USA continues to scale.

Manage GOAT USA’s sales and use tax compliance processes, franchise tax matters, including registrations, filings, payments, reconciliations, and ongoing requirements across applicable state and local jurisdictions.

Maintain appropriate state registrations and financial/tax-related filings as required by GOAT USA’s operations.

Serve as a primary liaison with external accounting firms, tax advisors, auditors, banks, financial institutions, tax software providers, and applicable government agencies, maintaining appropriate state registrations and financial/tax-related filings as required by the GOAT USA's operations.

Lead the annual financial statement audit or review process, including preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, reconciliations, and responses to auditor requests.

Ensure compliance with applicable financial reporting requirements, tax requirements such as federal, state, and local income tax, GOAT USA’s policies, and internal controls.

Oversee the accounting treatment of fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, leases, and other balance sheet accounts.

Partner with Technology and other stakeholders on accounting systems, integrations, financial data, and process improvements to strengthen the accuracy and scalability of the GOAT USA’s financial infrastructure.

Develop accounting reporting and processes that can effectively support continued growth in transaction volume, sales channels, locations, and business complexity.

Proactively identify financial, accounting, compliance, and control risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions to leadership.

Perform other accounting and financial responsibilities as required to support the needs and continued growth of the business.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.

CPA certification is preferred.

NetSuite ERP experience is required.

10+ years of accounting and tax experience.

Experience within apparel, retail, e-commerce, consumer products, or another inventory-based business is a plus.

Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting principles.

Demonstrated expertise in inventory accounting, COGS, gross margin and inventory reserves.

Experience with multi-channel revenue environments, including retail, e-commerce, and wholesale, preferred.

Experience managing multi-state sales and use tax compliance and working with external tax advisors preferred.

Experience coordinating financial statement audits or reviews and working directly with external accounting firms and auditors.

Experience leading and managing an accounting team, including direct reports, with the ability to coach, develop, and hold team members accountable for performance.

Strong analytical and financial problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

Strong understanding of accounting systems and financial technology.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate financial information effectively to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.

Ability to communicate effectively in English.

Full-Time, exempt.

Normal working hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; must be flexible to work evenings and occasional weekends during month-end, year-end, audits, and other business-critical periods.

Location: Fully in-person, Plainview, NY.

COMPENSATION

The salary for this role is $110,000 annually. The salary offered will take into account a number of factors, including the applicant job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors. A bonus may be included as part of the compensation package offer.
