Cost Accountant – Manufacturing
nPosition Overview
nThe Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing and maintaining accurate manufacturing costs, supporting inventory valuation, and providing financial insights that help drive operational and business decisions. This role partners closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and Finance to understand cost drivers, identify variances, and improve profitability.
nKey Responsibilities
nCost Accounting & Financial Analysis
nnnMaintain and analyze standard costs for materials, labor, and manufacturing overhead.
n
nnPerform monthly manufacturing cost accounting and inventory valuation activities.
n
nnAnalyze production costs, gross margins, and cost trends.
n
nnPrepare and review standard cost updates and annual cost roll-ups.
n
nnInvestigate material, labor, overhead, purchase price, and production variances.
n
nnIdentify cost drivers and recommend opportunities for cost reduction and improved profitability.
n
nnSupport accurate allocation of manufacturing overhead and other production costs.
n
n nInventory & Manufacturing
nnnReconcile inventory balances between the ERP system and the general ledger.
n
nnAnalyze inventory movements, adjustments, obsolescence, and excess inventory.
n
nnReview production transactions, bills of material, routings, and labor reporting for accuracy.
n
nnPartner with Operations to improve inventory accuracy and manufacturing reporting.
n
nnSupport physical inventory counts and cycle-count processes.
n
n nReporting & Month-End Close
nnnPrepare monthly cost accounting reports and manufacturing performance analysis.
n
nnSupport the month-end close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
n
nnDevelop and maintain reporting for manufacturing costs, margins, inventory, and operational performance.
n
nnProvide management with insights into financial results and key cost drivers.
n
nnAssist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning related to manufacturing operations.
n
n nProcess Improvement & Business Partnership
nnnPartner with manufacturing leadership to improve cost visibility and financial accountability.
n
nnIdentify opportunities to improve costing processes, reporting, and internal controls.
n
nnSupport ERP system improvements, cost accounting setup, and data integrity.
n
nnParticipate in cross-functional projects involving Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, and Procurement.
n
n nQualifications
nQualifications
nnnBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
n
nn3+ years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
n
nnStrong understanding of cost accounting and inventory principles.
n
nnExperience with standard costing and manufacturing variance analysis.
n
nnStrong Excel and analytical skills.
n
nnExperience with an ERP system such as JDE, Dynamics, Epicor, or similar.
n
nnStrong attention to detail and ability to work with large, complex data sets.
n
nnAbility to communicate financial information effectively to both Finance and Operations personnel.
