Counselor Intern – Unpaid Internship

Looking for More Than Just an Internship?

Are you a Master's-level student looking for meaningful hands-on experience in behavioral health? Iron Recovery and Wellness Center offers unpaid internship opportunities for students enrolled in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related mental health Master's programs.

Whether you are completing a foundation-year or advanced-year MSW placement, practicum, or counseling internship, this opportunity allows you to gain valuable experience working with clients in an outpatient psychiatric clinic while receiving professional supervision and working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.

You will have opportunities to develop your clinical skills, support clients and families, participate in treatment planning, complete documentation, and learn about behavioral health services.

Meaningful Clinical Experience

Gain hands-on experience in an outpatient psychiatric setting

Provide direct client support under supervision

Participate in intake assessments and ongoing client needs assessments

Learn and practice therapeutic interventions

Work with clients and families

Professional Development

Participate in case consultation with clinical supervisors

Collaborate with clinical and treatment team members

Learn about treatment goals, progress notes, and clinical documentation

Gain experience with client records, quality assurance, and compliance

Participate in community outreach and resource-building activities

Learn about behavioral health regulatory and billing processes

What You'll Do

As a Counselor Intern, you will work under supervision to support clients and families while developing practical clinical and professional skills.

Your responsibilities may include:

Assist with client services and intake assessments by working with clients and family members, identifying needs, and helping determine appropriate services and resources.

Support treatment and clinical documentation by assisting with therapeutic interventions, documenting treatment goals and progress, maintaining client records, and collaborating with supervisors and treatment team members.

Assist with scheduling, data entry, documentation, and records management.

Participate in case consultations and team meetings.

Support quality assurance activities, audits, compliance monitoring, and special projects.

Assist with community outreach, program development, and resource-building efforts.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in a mental health field, such as Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related discipline

Seeking a practicum or internship placement

Strong organizational and planning skills

Computer skills and familiarity with relevant software

Ability to manage emotional situations calmly and professionally

Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA and organizational policies

Ability to work collaboratively with clients, families, supervisors, and team members

Preferred Experience: None required.

Physical & Work Environment

The position may require sitting at a desk or meeting table, reaching, lifting, bending, standing, stooping, twisting, and climbing stairs. The work environment consists of modern, well-lit office facilities with multiple levels and elevator access.

Interns must follow applicable safety and security procedures, including requirements related to bloodborne pathogens, HIPAA, Right-to-Know, fire and safety procedures, and other organizational policies.
