Job description

General CustodianPerforms custodial services at assigned site to ensure an attractive, sanitary, safe, and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. Duties include cleaning, preparing, inspecting, and maintaining facilities and grounds; monitoring building systems; and responding to immediate safety and/or operational concerns.Essential duties and responsibilities include:Cleans and inspects assigned facilities and grounds, including classrooms, offices, gyms, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc., to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive educational environment.Consults with administrative personnel to plan, prioritize, and schedule custodial staff for daily activities and special events. Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors and takes appropriate action.Monitors building systems and responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns during and after standard hours.Prepares the school and/or grounds for activities and special events, including setting up chairs, stages, backdrops, bleachers, etc.Performs minor, job-related maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures.Prepares site for daily operations, including opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkways, etc. and removing snow from main entries, steps, doorways and entry sidewalks.Performs daily perimeter checks of facilities and grounds, including securing doors, windows, and gates; activating/deactivating alarm systems; turning on/off lights; etc.Assists with ordering custodial supplies and maintaining equipment.Assists with training; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and providing input into performance appraisals of Sub Custodians and Student Sweepers.Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars to gather and convey information required to perform job functions.Performs other duties as assigned.Education and related work experience:High school diploma or equivalent. No experience required. Experience preferred in custodial services and/or facilities maintenance.Licenses, registrations or certifications:Criminal background check required for hire.Technical skills, knowledge, & abilities:English language skills, oral and written communication skills, interpersonal relations skills, basic math skills, bilingual language skills preferred, attention to detail, ability and willingness to adhere to attendance expectations and to follow district procedures for absence reporting, ability to promote and follow Board of Trustees policies, District policies, and building and department procedures, ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds, ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate/required safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.Materials and equipment operating knowledge:Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals; typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, etc.; and office productivity programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, etc. preferred at hire; required within 3 months after hire. Operating knowledge of custodial cleaning equipment preferred at hire; required within 3 months after hire. Operating knowledge of basic hand tools preferred at hire.Reporting relationships & direction/guidance:Reports to: Head Custodian and Custodial SupervisorDirect reports: Sub Custodian (for general custodian role) 1-3 Student Sweeper 1-2 Assists with training; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and providing input into performance appraisals.Budget and/or resource responsibility:Assists with initiating requisitions for supplies to maintain needed inventory.Physical requirements & working conditions:The physical demands, work environment factors, and mental functions are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
