Job description
CustodianThe custodian shall provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.A high school diploma is preferred. Must have experience with general cleaning and grounds maintenance.Duties and Responsibilities:Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.Performs such yard-keeping chores as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.Cleans all chalkboards or wipe off boards as needed.Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian.Reports immediately to the principal and head custodian any emergency or damage to school property.Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved.Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.Reports to work on time.Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Maintenance Supervisor.Essential Functions:In addition to the physical and mental capabilities implied by the responsibilities detailed above, the essential functions of a custodian: walking, standing, bending, squatting, perform manual work requiring some physical strength and agility, ability to read and write and to follow oral and written instructions, moderately heavy physical exertion is frequently required to lift and move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.The job of custodian involves adapting to a changing educational environment and therefore, while accurate, is not exhaustive.Period of Employment: 243 DaysImmediate Supervisor: Building Maintenance Supervisor Updated 8/27/2008
