Custodian Job DescriptionPosition: CustodianReports to: Support Services Manager/Building PrincipalEmployment Status: Regular/Full-timeFLSA Status: Classified Non-ExemptDescription: Provide a clean and safe environment for students and staff. Perform general custodial duties, e.g., empty trash, vacuum carpet, sweep and mop. Assist head maintenance in cleaning, maintaining and daily operation of school building. Act as replacement during head maintenance's or evening fireman's (H.S.) absences as directed by the administrationEssential Functions:Ensure safety of studentsSweep, vacuum, mop and wax floorsEmpty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails, and pencil sharpenersRemove cobwebs and clean windowsPolish furniture and woodworkClean and maintain custodial equipment and materialsTransport all necessary school maintenance and custodial suppliesEnsure the care, condition, appearance, repair or replacement of all physical equipment, building, facilities, and groundsPromote good safety practices and proceduresClean and sanitize assigned school, e.g., restrooms, classrooms, spills, etc.Help with setup and cleanup for various school activitiesUse, measure and relabel chemicalsClean carpetsWash all furniture, walls, halls, windows, window seals, and doorsDisinfect water fountainsSpot mop and mop classroomsRemove writing on wallsMake contacts with the public with tact and diplomacyMaintain respect at all times for confidential informationInteract in a positive manner with staff, students and parentsDispose of debris and maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly mannerReport to Buildings and Grounds Supervisor any damaged, broken, loose fixtures and/or equipmentAdjust to various locations and work requirements as needed, perform other duties as assigned by the Buildings and Grounds SupervisorPerform minor repairs, including, but not limited to, glass replacement, electrical repairs, wood repairs, painting and metal repairsRequest needed equipment, materials and suppliesPerform seasonal duties such as grass mowing, raking, salting and snow removal, litter removal, sprinkling, landscaping, trimming, etc., as directed by the Buildings and Grounds SupervisorMaintain a clean, safe and neat boiler roomEmpty and clean waste receptacles, trash cans and pencil sharpenersRefill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue in all school building restroomsCheck boiler room nightly for orderliness, safety, etc.Secure building nightlyCheck and prepare controls for water, lights, heat and cooling facilities as assignedCheck building to assure maximum securitySweeping, cleaning, mopping, washing, waxing, dusting, wiping and vacuuming all surfaces to maintain cleanliness throughout building and grounds and supervise other employees doing the sameKeep work and storage areas neat and orderlyTour building periodically and remain alert for dangerous, hazardous conditions, or items in need of maintenanceSet up equipment and furniture for special events and use of building for school and community functionsMaintain records as requested by the Buildings and Grounds SupervisorClean all water coolersClean hallway glass display casesClean school building loungesPromote good public relationsServe as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beingsScrub, strip, seal, and wax floorsRespond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate mannerOperate and perform routine maintenance on the heating systemPass on to other employees instructions and requests received from the Buildings and Grounds SupervisorMaintain building security system ensures building is secure and lockedMaintain accurate inventory of all custodial equipment, materials and suppliesPerform routine maintenance as requiredAssist with major repairs as assignedAssist in the control of all maintenance and custodial tools and suppliesAssist work crews on assigned tasksPerform electrical, plumbing duties as requiredPerform yearly inventory of work area, supplies and equipmentPerform other duties as assigned by the Buildings and Grounds SupervisorQualifications:High school diploma or general education degree (GED)One to two years related experience desiredMust be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, paintingMust be able to demonstrate the ability to use most common hand toolsRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to work effectively with othersAbility to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally
