Job description

Custodial ServicesProvides custodial services for a healthy and safe environment by cleaning and maintaining designated facilities at assigned school.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesSweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums, shampoos, and spot cleans carpets; dusts and cleans blinds, curtains, and screensDusts and polishes furniture and woodworkPolishes metal workCleans and sanitizes restrooms, plumbing fixtures, and fountains; disinfects biohazard storage areasPicks up litter, empties and cleans trash containers; empties refuse into main binCleans and washes windows, walls, walkways, patios and other outside areasClimbs ladders, cleans lighting equipment, and equipment and replaces light bulbs or fluorescent tubesRearranges and moves furniture and equipmentMaintains stock of supplies such as soap, towels, and tissuesMaintains cleaning tools, equipment, and materials in proper conditionAssists with set-up and cleaning for special eventsMaintains security of building by ensuring that doors and windows are locked; reports unlocked doors and windows, fire hazards and persons acting suspiciously to supervision or school security; denies access to unauthorized personsMay operate a vehicle, such as a pick-up truck or vanAdheres to instructions for mixing and diluting cleaners, disinfectants, and stripping agents to ensure proper usage strength and safe useReports equipment malfunctions, needed repairs and safety/hygiene infractions to supervisorMay provide guidance or training to other custodial staffFollows safe work procedures; ensures proper safety precautions, regulations, and industrial hygiene practices are observedKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of modern methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial workKnowledge of the proper care and storage of custodial equipment and materialsKnowledge of dilution of cleaning chemicals/conversion of pH charts and of the use of MSDSAbility to recognize potential safety problems and to take steps to prevent hazardsAbility to operate modern mechanical equipment such as floor vacuums (wet and dry), floor buffers, carpet shampoo and steam cleaners, mops, brooms, dust pans, ladders, small hand tools, computer (timecard entry) and vehiclesAbility to communicate effectively verbally and in writingAbility to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situationsAbility to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community membersKnowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policiesAbility to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional responseQualifications & RequirementsEducation & Experience:High school diploma or general education degree (GED)One year of previous custodial experience preferredAny equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirementsComputer Proficiency: nonePhysical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment and will be subject to exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals and biohazards. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.Work EnvironmentIndoor environment and outdoors in all types of weather conditions with exposure to heat, cold, dust and fumes. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment and will be subject to exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals and biohazards. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times.
