About this opportunity

Job description

RealDefense is a multi-brand consumer software company (iolo, RealDefense, and others) focusing on cybersecurity offerings for consumers and businesses. We are hiring a Data Scientist, Growth to help build that capability from the ground up.

This role answers the questions leadership cares about most. When we launch a product, change our media mix, adjust pricing, or run a test, did it actually change customer lifetime value, or are we looking at noise, seasonality, or a shift in who we acquired? You'll bring the statistical judgment to tell the difference and the business sense to explain it clearly to people who don't think in confidence intervals.

You'll also be the day-to-day owner of our production sBG model. You'll monitor its performance, catch drift, and flag when changes in our customer cohorts mean the model's assumptions no longer hold.

What You’ll Do

Measure what actually moves LTV

Evaluate how new product launches, pricing and bundling changes, media mix shifts, and major initiatives affect retention, revenue, and customer lifetime value.

Separate causal effects from correlation. Know when a clean A/B test is possible, when a quasi-experimental approach (diff-in-diff, matched cohorts, interrupted time series, synthetic control) is the best available option, and when the honest answer is "we can't tell yet."

Partner with Marketing and Product to design tests with sound hypotheses, adequate sample sizes, and success metrics defined up front, then read results rigorously, including tests that don't win.

Own model performance in production

Monitor our sBG model for data drift, prediction drift, and degrading accuracy, and diagnose the root cause when performance changes.

Track how cohort composition (acquisition channel, brand, offer, trial type) shifts over time and assess what those shifts mean for model reliability and forecasts.

Recommend when to recalibrate, retrain, or rethink, and communicate model limitations transparently.

Build the foundation for retention and lifecycle analytics

Analyze cohort retention curves, churn drivers, and renewal behavior across brands and products.

Improve how we forecast LTV so that planning reflects what recent cohorts are doing, not just what historical cohorts did.

Work with our analytics engineers to define trusted, reusable metrics in dbt so the whole company works from the same numbers.

Turn complex analyses into clear recommendations for executives: what happened, how confident we are, and what we should do next.

Proactively surface risks and opportunities in the data rather than waiting for a ticket.

Help raise the analytical bar across the team by sharing methods, reviewing approaches, and making good practice the default.

What You Bring

4+ years of experience in marketing, retention, growth, or product analytics, ideally in subscription, SaaS, e-commerce, or consumer digital businesses.

Strong SQL skills. You're comfortable wrangling messy, multi-source data and validating it before you trust it.

Proficiency in Python or R for statistical analysis and modeling. We're agnostic.

A solid applied statistics foundation: regression, hypothesis testing, experimental design, and an understanding of when common methods break down.

Working knowledge of causal inference concepts and the discipline to avoid overclaiming.

Experience with cohort analysis, retention curves, churn analysis, or LTV modeling.

Familiarity with monitoring model performance in production, including drift detection and interpreting feature and cohort shifts.

Business acumen. You care about why a number matters, not just how to compute it.

Clear written and verbal communication, especially with non-technical audiences.

Nice to Have

Experience with Databricks and dbt.

Exposure to survival analysis, Bayesian methods, uplift modeling, or media mix modeling.

Experience with gradient boosting models (XGBoost, LightGBM, etc.) in a business setting.

Background in subscription billing, trials, renewals, or payment recovery.

Experience as an early data science hire in an organization building its analytics maturity.

What This Role Isn't

To save everyone time:

Not a pure statistics or research role. Rigor matters, but in service of business decisions, not methodological perfection.

Not an ML engineering role. You'll own model performance and interpretation, not build deployment infrastructure.

Not a dashboard or reporting role. You may build occasional views to share findings, but your value is in the analysis and the "so what."

Why Join

You’ll have real ownership and direct visibility with senior leadership. Your work will shape how a growing company measures success and makes investment decisions. This is a chance to build data science practice rather than inherit it.
