Job description

Deputy SheriffThe Deputy Sheriff patrols and investigates activities, traffic control, crowd control, and public relations, witness interviewing, evidence collection and management, basic crime prevention methods, weapon and equipment operation and maintenance, report preparation, and other routine law enforcement duties. Other duties must be performed as assigned by the Sergeants, Patrol/Investigations Captain, Chief Deputy Sheriff and/or the Sheriff.First review of applications on August 28th, 2026Essential duties and responsibilities include:Maintains order, responds to emergencies, protects people and property, and enforces motor vehicle and criminal law and County ordinancesArrests perpetrator of criminal act or submits citation or warning to violator of motor vehicle or County ordinanceMonitors traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving proceduresDirects traffic flow and reroutes traffic in case of emergenciesReviews facts to determine if criminal act or statute violation is involvedEvaluates complaint and emergency-request information to determine response requirementsInvestigates traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if crime has been committed or Motor vehicle laws are violatedProvides road information to assist motorists; relays complaint and emergency-request information to appropriate agency communication centerMaintains vehicle and equipment. Informs supervisor if repair is neededCautions, evicts, or apprehends violators of laws and regulationsCompletes reports and required documentation per department policy in an accurate and timely mannerMaintains up-to-date job knowledge, certifications, licenses and registrations. Keeps up to date on laws, rules and regulations. Recommends policy/procedure changes to supervisorEducation and experience requirements include:Associate's Degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in police science or related fieldCertificates, licenses, registrations:Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver's License that will allow unrestricted performance of Deputy Sheriff dutiesValid Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer certification or be certifiable upon hireKnowledge, skills and abilities required to perform job:Knowledge of police communication methods and techniquesKnowledge of weaponry, public safety, and security operations, rules, regulations precautions, prevention, and the protection of people, data and propertyKnowledge of laws, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules and the democratic political processKnowledge of state statutes, county ordinances and other regulations which apply to county lands and facilitiesExcellent interpersonal skills in dealing with the public in enforcement situations requiredUtilize effective communication skills; be polite, courteous and professional in mannerProblem Identification skills – identifying the nature of problemsSocial Perceptiveness skills – being aware of other' reactions and understanding why they react the way they doCritical Thinking skills – using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approachesSpeech skills – talking to others to effectively convey informationActive Listening skills – listening to what other people are saying and asking questions as appropriateJudgment and Decision Making skills – weighing the relative risks and benefits of a potential actionDocumenting/Recording Information – entering, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written, oral or electronic data formatResolving Conflict, Negotiating with Others – handling complaints, arbitrating disputes, resolving grievances or otherwise negotiating with othersCommunicating with Other Workers – observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources via contact with supervisors, fellow workers and subordinates, the public, government and other external sourcesOperating Vehicles or Equipment – running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipmentPerforming General Physical Activities – performing physical activities that require moving one's whole body, such as in climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, where the activities often also require considerable use of the arms and legs such as in physical handling of persons or objectsEstablish and Maintain Relationships – developing constructive and cooperative working relations among the county and other agenciesAbility to read and interpret documents and laws in the English languageAbility to listen to and understand information and ideas in spoken and written format so individuals may effectively understand and convey communicationsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimalsAbility to compute rate, ratio, and percentAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formInductive and deductive reasoning – ability to combine separate pieces of information, or specific answers to problems, to form general rules or conclusions; includes coming up with a logical explanation for why a series of seemingly unrelated events occur together and deciding if an answer makes sense
