Job description

Deputy SheriffPay Schedule XIII, Grade 6S, Regular Schedule: 40 hours per weekRecruit Employment Bonus The Sheriff's Office will award a Hiring Bonus of $6000 for Entry Level Deputy Sheriffs. The bonus will be paid in three (3) equal payments at the time of hire; after training; and after completion of probationary status.A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below. You MUST meet the following requirements before you can be hired as a Deputy Sheriff:Be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment;Have a high school diploma, GED, or an appropriate equivalent;Be a citizen of the United States;Have a valid driver's license;Pass the written examination;Pass the physical agility examination;Complete a comprehensive background investigation;Complete a psychological evaluation, polygraph examination and;Pass a physical and medical examination.IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION BELOWMAKE SURE TO READ ABOUT THE TESTING PROCESS OUTLINED IN THE "QUALIFICATIONS" SECTION OF THIS JOB POSTING.Examples of DutiesUnder close supervision, trains to perform and performs responsible law enforcement and regulatory work, which includes serving civil and criminal process, making arrests, maintaining courtroom security, and maintaining security of and transporting prisoners.Serves summonses, writs, body attachments, warrants, ex-parte orders and similar court documents.Enforces court orders by making criminal and civil arrests, collecting judgments, taking possession of property, and conducting Sheriff's sales and levies of chattels, goods, and real property.Conducts investigations concerning Sheriff's Office business and at the request of the Circuit Court of Baltimore County.Maintains peace and security of the courts, the courts building complex, and judicial employees.Maintains custody and transportation of inmates, prisoners, and detainees to and from court proceedings, courthouses, detention, correctional and rehabilitation facilities throughout the State of Maryland.Carries, maintains, trains, and is proficient in the use of a firearm.Operates a radio-equipped County vehicle.Operates radio, telephone, and other communications devices.Completes written reports.Functions as a field-training officer for probationary Deputy Sheriffs.Participates in a variety of training.Examples of Other DutiesMaintains vehicles.Participates in public relations duties by speaking to school, civic, and other groups regarding functions of the Sheriff's Office.May perform clerical duties.Performs other related duties as required.(NOTE: The duties and responsibilities listed above are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications for all positions in this class. Each position may not be required to perform all of the essential job functions listed.)QualificationsPossession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent. Licenses and Certifications Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial Class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Age Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Character Applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and drug test. Citizenship Applicants must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment. Physical Requirements Employees must be able to perform the duties of the position without posing a threat to the health and safety of others, as determined by a test of physical ability. In addition, after accepting an appointment to a position within this classification, all candidates are required to pass a physical examination. Passers of the written examination must successfully complete a test of physical ability. This test, which will be scheduled at a later date by the Sheriff's Office, consists of the following activities: -1 1/2 mile run -sit-ups -push-ups -fire-arms familiarization EXAMINATION PROCEDURE Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of the training and experience as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation. Applicants meeting the required qualifications according to information submitted on their application and supplemental questions will be scheduled for written testing .SECURITY NOTICEFor the safety of everyone, the possession of the following items is strictly prohibited within this facility:FirearmsDangerous weaponsKnivesStun guns/tasersRazorsAmmunitionExplosivesBody armorOtherIndividuals carrying who do not comply with this notice will be asked to vacate the premises and reschedule their exam for a later date and time.Conditions of EmploymentDuring the first year of employment, all employees must receive certification as a Deputy Sheriff by the Maryland Police Training Commission, which includes firearms qualification, and must maintain same throughout employment. Employees must pass retraining requirements as mandated throughout employment. Employees work an average scheduled workweek of 40 hours, which may include Saturday, Sunday, holidays, evenings, and nights. Employees are subject to call to duty or overtime in emergencies with little or no notice. Physical and Environmental Conditions The work of this classification entails frequent walking, standing, and the operation of vehicles and firearms. Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.BenefitsEmployment Benefits for Full-Time, Merit or Classified Employees Baltimore County General Government offers the following benefits to full-time,merit or classified employees. Salary Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated. Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County. Employee Assistance Program Our Employee Assistance Program provides confidential and professional assessment and referral assistance for employees and eligible dependents in the household who are experiencing personal problems that may be affecting work performance, job satisfaction, or overall quality of life. Health Insurance Health Insurance benefits elected become effective the first day of the month following the date of hire if the employee has completed online enrollment prior to that date. New employees must enroll within thirty (30) calendar days of hire. Plans offered include: Medical, Prescription, Dental and Vision insurance. Flexible Spending Accounts Opportunity to set aside pre-tax dollars, through payroll deduction, for eligible unreimbursed medical care expenses and/or dependent care costs. Life Insurance Employees may elect basic term life insurance for themselves equal to one time the employee's annual salary, rounded to the next higher $1,000. Employees contribute a portion of the premium through monthly payroll deductions. The County also offers an Additional/Employee paid Life Insurance plan with coverage up to $100,000. Retirement Employees are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System
