Job description

Detention SergeantSalary: $29.41/hr.To supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing services within the Police Department; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. To participate in a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in the processing of prisoners for detention in the municipal detention facility; to oversee the safety and well-being of all prisoners; and to provide responsible administrative and technical support to the detention function in a stressful environment.Detention Sergeant is a civilian position. It is subordinate in rank to all sworn supervisors and is responsible for the supervision of detention officers. General supervision is provided by a Police Lieutenant.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesAll behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct & Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.Supervise and coordinate activities of subordinates.Act as the responsible supervisor when needed on an overtime basis.If needed, notify a sworn supervisor of arrest reports in need of approval.Monitor the safety of all detained persons in the custody of the Mesquite Police Department. Immediately act when the safety of any person in the custody of the Mesquite Police Department is in jeopardy.Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of the detention staff.Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; recommend and implement discipline procedures; conduct performance appraisals as assigned.Prepare various reports on activities; attend meetings.Monitor cells regularly to determine prisoner well-being.Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and obtain records, information and other various data.Review program, project, and report progress. Ensure that all subordinate staff comply with departmental regulations and policies; assist with investigations regarding subordinate staff conduct; assist in monitoring career development and training for all assigned staff.Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement; and participate on department boards and committees.Oversee the maintenance and repair of all assigned departmental equipment and supplies; inspect equipment regularly; maintain appropriate inventory levels of supplies and materials; and may assist in monitoring facility maintenance.May supervise activities and programs for personnel training; maintain employee training records; monitor and conduct classes; evaluate and revise lesson plans; and review personnel progress in programs.Participate in investigations of allegations of misconduct by department personnel.Respond to internal or external requests for information about departmental matters.Participate in the preparation of and administration of the department budget.Perform other duties as assigned.Other Duties And ResponsibilitiesNotarize legal documents as necessary.Assist with processing police records as assigned.Answers and directs public inquiries in person or on the phone.Minimum Job RequirementsEducation: High School Diploma or GED. Experience: Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, jail operations, corrections, or a related field. Prior supervisory experience is preferred. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license.Work Schedule: VariousPhysical Requirements / Work EnvironmentBenefitsFull Time Employees: The City of Mesquite offers the Zero Premium, Employee Only Benefits under the following plans: High Deductible Medical Plan, Dental HMO Plan, Vision Plan, and Life Insurance. The City is self-insured and offers a choice of two medical plans: HSA, and High Deductible Medical Plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Employee medical coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. Employees enrolled in the City's self-insured medical plan also have access to the Mesquite Employee Health Center (MEHC) clinic and pharmacy. The City offers three dental plan options: a managed plan (DHMO), an indemnity plan (DPPO), an enhanced indemnity plan (DPPO Enhanced). Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. The City offers free Vision Insurance to all employees. Dependents can be added for an additional fee. Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. The following voluntary benefits are available to full-time employees: Supplemental Life, AD&D Insurance, Cancer Insurance and Long-Term Disability Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions. Other benefits include Social Security, Tax Saver Program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), Deferred Compensation Plans, Direct Deposit, Paid Holidays, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Leave.
